hooking up a charger to dual batteries

Why are the batteries hook up to +to - and can I hook them up with a 12 volt battery charger?

What kind of batteries do you have...pencil cells .AA or some other ones?

Is the battery in a truck or car..is there two batteries of 12 volts or oneof 24 volts and how are they contected together
