Why do people ask stupid questions?

As far as I'm concerned; no question is "stupid". I think that a stupid question might be construed as presenting a personal judgement rather than a legitimate observation. What might be "stupid" to one person could be meaningful to someone else. I sometimes think that maybe the person is shy and he/she is trying to make small talk or maybe the person just isn't in to small talk. Sometimes I just don't think before I open my mouth! LOL~ What do you think? Please comment~

Just to make a serious topic into more lively one with an icebreaker.

Hey, I hear ya. Some people have responded to me like I am an idiot and I know I am not. Some people know a lot about some things and others know a lot about others. There is no such thing as a stupid question.

LOL I so agree with you and I have always said that the only stupid question is the one not asked. I did ask a question that I thought was a very good question and got teased a lot for it. I really don't think the others knew the answer and I was just the one who asked but they didn't want anyone to know that they didn't know either. That situation made me stop asking questions in public and I would ask when I could get the person alone. I agree it may just be an ice breaker to open up the conversation or lighten the conversation. I think a lot of people open their mouths before thinking sometimes! LOL :)

In my opinion it is up to the person awnsering the question, if he likes to have discussion on serious topics then the questions which are less important, will not attract him at all and will try to see for better topics however, if questions are put with a thought in it , it would be much better. I also do not like non serious questions, if makes me sick, it is nothing but nature of a person.

People may be just shy and they just ask any little question to start a conversation...this is why i think people may ask dumb questions. They may think the question(s) they ask may be stupid but not question is dumb
