ok so ive got 10cats at present 5 of which are kittens. I am looking for any home remedies that kill parasites such as ear mites, worms and fleas. At the moment i am trying oil and garlic for ear mites (it stinks lol) just wondered if anyone has actually tried this or any other home made mixture that actually works? I have heard that wormwood and garlic is good at keeping worms at bay too..but is this worth a try or is there anything else? I have also heard that garlic keep fleas away but still is this a myth? I know the vet is probably the best thing but why spend when you can make it just as good with every day items? Also i have been ripped off by vets in the past so i am trying to turn to alternative if i can!! All replies much appreciated

Apple cider vinegar (either sprayed or rubbed on) is suppose to help with fleas. I would not give you cats garlic or put is anywhere it could lick. Per our vet (and many online resources) garlic, onion, and shallots can cause damage to the cats red blood cells. Raw garlic and onions can cause ulcers and irritation of the mouth, esophagus and stomach.

A few online resources: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=0&articleid=1350 http://www.care2.com/greenliving/safe-flea-repellents-for-cats.html http://www.ecomall.com/greenshopping/fleacontrol.htm (the above 2 links have some alternate food items that help with keeping pests of of cats)

Garlic does help keep the fleas off dogs. My husband loves garlic and when we first got married we used it a lot in dishes. My dog would eat leftovers and that summer she did not have many if any fleas. I finally realized why. I have since seen it as an ingredient in the pills that you buy for dogs to keep fleas away.

Garlic is also good for fleas, mix a little in the food (has to be wet) daily. Once they absorb the garlic it will repel fleas

Teatree oil might work better, but at the very least, cleaning the ear with some sort of oil is temporarily a solution to the problem. There are home remedies you can try, or if you are looking for natural remedies, there are some things that work well. I've included a link to a site that recommends all natural remedies and hopefully this will help your cats: http://www.earthclinic.com/Pets/ear_mites.html

I have tried vitamin e oil for the earmites. Take a capsule of it (you can get it in the vitamin section of the store), poke a small hole in one end and carefully squeeze it into the ear. Rub the ear together so it gets worked down in there. I'm not sure about anything for worms. Sorry. :( My sister-in-law suggested tea rose oil for fleas. A drop in between the shoulder blades. If you have a heavy infestation, you'll need to try one of the over-the-counter products. Keep watch for reactions to these, though. We had to take our kitties to the vet for flea treatments. I tried everything and all the products did was give the babies horrible skin problems. Also treat the house with flea treatments. We were told to bomb with a flea bomb that had residual effects. That way the new eggs hatching would get killed as well. Hope this helps!

I think a lot of vets do rip you off! Not only that but sometimes the medications the give do more harm then good. After going to several vets and my poor cat only feeling crappier from their "treatments" I started to go a more natural route and she's fine. A good site to find natural treatments as well as reviews on them is: http://www.earthclinic.com/pets.html. Good luck!

I know exactly what you mean about vets ripping you off. The only thing I can really help you with is the fleas. This may sound strange but bathing the cats in the original blue dawn dish soap will kill the fleas. It won't keep them from coming back. And giving them all a bath will be real fun.lol. I buy worm medicine at walmart. Its not really that expensive and it does work. I think you can buy the ear mites medicine there too. Hopefully someone can give you some more ideas so you don't have to buy that stuff. Good luck.
