Preference of having son or daughter?

I have three sons. My mum have 3 daughters. In the chinese society having boys is considered "lucky" as boys will carry on the family name. I am luckly that my father does not have such thought. I do wonder if people in this modern society still have gender preference? Isn't it more important to ensure that the baby (whatever gender) is healthy and happy?

You are really lucky to have three sons. Chinese? I am just wondering how come you have three sons in all since family planning in China has been carried out ever since 1980s. Good for you and congratulations. As to me, I think it is the same either to have a boy or a girl. Though boys can carry on the family name, girls can as well on condition that her husband gets married with the girl by using the girl's surname. Besides, the family name is nothing but a symbol. What do you think, friend?

I am chinese but I reside in Malaysia. That is why the 1 child policy doesnot apply to me. I do agree with that the family name is just a symbol. To many chinese I am lucky to have 3 boys. However like the saying goes nothing is perfect. My husband prefers Daughters!!! haha

Thanks for your response to make the mystery revealed. You are really lucky to have three sons to Chinese standards. Since you reside in Malaysia, do they have a one-child policy in each family?

When I started having children I really wanted 2 boys and 1 girl. Not to be picky:) I ended up having 3 boys and then I really wanted a girl. I was very lucky and got my girl. I have enjoyed all of my children equally although they are all so very different. I am very glad that I did get a daughter because I think that as mothers get older they tend to have a much stronger relationship with their daughters over their sons.

I haven't encountered gender preference in a very long time. I know that my mom used to tell me stories about korea and how boys were considered lucky as well. I don't understand this. It is the woman who should be considered a treasured item, because we are the ones who carry the child. Without us you can have no children! So I don't understand that whole lucky boy thing. My mom was just happy to have us and we were healthy. I too was so happy to have my daughter. Never was I disappointed.
