Our family goes through a gallon of milk everyday and it's very costly. We spend upwards of $100 or more every month on milk. Does anyone have a solution for cutting down milk cost? Would appreciate any tips.

I thought it was about normal to go through a gallon every day. If the little one is not drinking milk, then me and my spouse make up the difference. If she is drinking more milk, we cut back our own milk consumption. Recently I heard that drinking milk might help prevent colon cancer and hypertension. Not sure if that's true, but if it is, we're good! We got all the milk drinkers in our house! Just looking for a way to save money on the stuff. It's costing us about $120 monthly. That's not exactly in our budget.

Unless you have a big family, that's a lot of milk! Besides using powdered milk whenever you can, you can also use water that peeled potatoes have been boiled in as a substitute for milk in most baked recipes and in gravies and sauces. When you find milk on sale, stock up! It freezes very well. You'll have to thaw it in the refrigerator and that takes a couple of days, so plan ahead for that one. Sometimes you can find milk with a close expiration date that's been marked down. Buy it and freeze it. If you see a gallon that's near the expiration date but hasn't been marked down, ask the manager if he will give you a discount on it. Probably the most obvious method: Cut back on it. Nutritionally speaking, you can substitute other things, like cheese and vegetables to get the same vitamins and minerals. Drink water sometimes instead of milk. Attack the problem from all angles and you can decrease the amount you use.

you family is spending a fortune in milk. I think you would to consider to buy a cow or start a farm or maybe a business around the milk you know when you start a business. you always find some place where it is more cheap and if you buy more you would get a better price.

I don't use milk a lot because I'm not a big fan of milk too often. However, an idea if you use Milk to cook with is to buy dry milk. You really don't notice a difference in most things when you cook with dry milk as opposed to regular milk. That would at least cut down a little if you use milk frequently in your cooking. If you're drinking that much milk...well you guys should be crazy healthy shouldn't you!?

Depending on where you are located and the ages of your children you can sign up for WIC which is a US government funded program that provides milk, eggs, cheese, juice, cereal, and peanut butter to families with children ages 5 and younger. There are income guidelines but they are pretty high. WIC is not really considered a form of welfare or government assistance. Call your county family services for more information. I have 4 kids and we go through about a gallon a day. We were on WIC but my children are too old now.

Why don't you try drinking soy milk? I am now drinking soy mailk daily but I don't buy in forms of liquid. I buy the powdered type and mix it myself. It is much cheaper and it tastes yummy! I have a brand to recommend to you. You can open this url to find out about soy milk and Melilea Organic. http://traditionalherbs.blogspot.com Hope this helps to reduce your family revenues on milk.

I use powdered milk for baking. Also adults do not need to use whole milk. They can get away with two percent and skim, and with the latter, you can use powdered. Small babies need the whole milk as do pregnant women. Do you get your milk delivered or do you go to the grocery store? It costs more to get it delivered. Also are your children using milk as a substitute for water? You could also consider joining Costco and or buying powdered milk in bulk.

We used to make our milk with 1/2 real milk and 1/2 mde up powdered milk. I never noticed the difference but my Husband could tell if I walked the fresh milk down the powdered milk isle. Other wise drink more water and cut back on what you are drinking. Milk is good for you but so is a lot of other things. We also drink soy milk but the cost is higher. It has a longer shelf life so it never goes bad, but it does not sound like milk going bad is a problem for your family. This one is a toughy. I hope you can figure something out. $120 is a lot of cash.

I used to be on WIC. Then, when we don't qualify for it anymore, the cost of milk really put a dent in our budget..especially with how much they cost these days!! So, I shopped around and found a nearby store run by the Amish community that sells fresh milk. Their milk is organic and costs LESS than regular milk at the store. Needless to say, I don't get milk from grocery stores anymore. My advice would be to shop around and see if there are local stores like that you can frequent.

I use powdered nonfat milk and cook with it. You can't tell the stuff isn't the real thing unless you drink it.

Wow!!! That is a lot of milk. I buy about 6 bags a week and my kids are usually with me about 4 days per week. I am not sure I would recommend cutting down on milk. It is important for the growth of your children. However, if they are overdoing it, make sure they are having a daily quota of water as well. Water is good for you too and cleans out the system. cheers

Do you have a walmart near you? Our local walmart has been carrying milk at a low price of $1.88 a gallon for almost 2 yrs now. It saves me a bundle!!! Ecspecially when everyone else is selling it at almost $4 a gallon!

Buy UHT milk and that is lot more cheaper. Fresh milk is costly. If I buy fresh milk for making yogurt and for other uses, milk consumption will be too high in my home. So I switched to UHT milk. Example: I may need almost 10 cans of milk in case of fresh milk. It costs me about s$4.70 per can. So it is close to 45$. If I buy UHT MILK one box which contains 12 cartons of milk. It costs me only $21. So the cost is cut by half this way.
