Upbringing and environment, the things that you experienced in childhood greatly contribute to your personality. Abuse and neglect can have a negative effect on your personality. While praise and encouragement can have a positive effect.
Once a persons personality is formed, it is extremely hard, but possible to change. For instance, a person like me, with a personality disorder, like Borderline, requires anywhere from 5 to ten years of therapy to unlearn the ingrained maladaptive behavior.
The personality has a lot to do with how you see yourself and how you perceive the world around you. As we all know, the mind is very complicated.
