When we were a child we were scared about everything... when I was a child I am really afraid of snake..but when I grow up I realize that fear is just a state of mind, when you believe that you are afraid of certain things you will really get afraid of it, because that's what your mind saying, then try to say, feel and believe that you are not afraid of things that make you afraid and you will fear no more the things that make you fear. As of now I don't get afraid easily, but I do feel afraid but I don't let it affect me, my life and life of other people who are close to me or those who surround me. How about you? What have you done to overcome your greatest fear in life?

I dont think I have even overcame any of my fears, but I deal with it. Im scared of wasps, and I do get scared when they come around, but theres no way to get rid of them, so i suck it up and deal with it. Over coming fears are hard to do, but i like having friends with me when I need to face them, it just gives me the motivation to suck it up because I dont want to embarass myself and back down infront of them.

I think I have overcome my fears by facing them. However, I am still afraid of rattlesnakes, and black widows. We have some of those creatures in Southern California. NO matter what I do I still fear them.

As a therapist, I have helped many people with irrational fears and you are right, it usually a belief that has got "stuck" in the mind. My job is to show the client that the fear is really an illusion that what is feared is not as fearsome as the mind believes. Some fears run quite deep and it can take a little while for it to be uprooted completely. As a child I had a fear of the dentist and suddenly, during my training as a therapist, I remembered being about 2 years of age, and being taken away in an aumbulance. I remembered all the pain with it, and because they thought I had a contageous disease, I was put into an intensive care isolation ward and what was prominent in my mind was all the white uniforms and the smells. I couldn't be with my parents and I was very frightened and in pain. I repressed it all. Years later on my first visit to the dentist, I saw white coats and smelled the smells and my mind unconsciously associated it with my hospital stay and I became fearful of my life once again. Once this memory resurfaced, I lost my fear of the dentist and could see that he was there to help protect my teeth and not hurt me. We need to face and see our irrational fears for what they are, past illusions replaying themselves in the present.
