I have two cats and I want to get more, even though my husband won't let me. So whats your opinion, how many cats are too many?

That really depends on how many you can afford to take care of, and how much love you have to give them. I have more than 20, because I never turn away strays. I love each and every one of them. I have them spayed and neutered so that they won't multiply, since I can't afford too many more. But everyone that knows me, knows that I'd rather starve myself than to let my animals(not that I am starving), but I would have to say that if it weren't for the fact that they all needed a home at the time the came to me, I would never have set out to have this many. I would prefer to only have 5 or 6 probably. But, I am a stray cats best friend. Or dog too, for that matter. I have 8 of them. 4 of them were strays. I am more of a cat person than a dog person, but I love both.

20 cats are a few too many for me. When I have a house, I think I would like to have 3 or 4 of them. But for right now I think I'll stick to 2 cats. But I think it is wonderful of you to take in all those cats. Blessed Be.

I know people who have five or more cats. Their houses smell like cats. Their clothes all have cat hair on them. The have vet bills. I think for them it is too many cats. I've had as many as two at a time. I wouldn't want more than that. It is nice for them to have companionship with another cat. But more cats complicate the relationships. I think two cats are plenty, unless they are barn cats that don't ever come inside.

I think it all depends on your ability to care for them. There are many people who "collect" cats or dogs, and this is where it becomes dangerous. As long as you can take care of the cats, and have a clean and sanitary home, then I do not see a problem with three cats. I have a friend who wanted more cats, but knew she couldn't care for them in the house. So, she started feeding neighborhood strays, trapping them, getting them spayed/neutered, and releasing them near her house. This way, she has many cats, but it actually contributing something to the cat commuinity by keeping their numbers down!!! The vet does the spay/neutering for free. Good luck, and take good care of those little kitties! Try adopting on if you are going to get one.

Mine come from the vets office. Ones they are trying to find homes for. But getting strays neutered/spade is a noble thing. Tell your friend that I think that is cool.

It definitely depends on the size of your living space and also how settled in where you live you are. If you live in an apartment 1 or 2 bedroom I would say no more than maybe 2 cats. If you have a house with several bedrooms where they can run around, then I would say 3. The reason why I mention "Being settled" is I don't think it's a lot of fun for you or the cats if you're moving a lot. You hear the story of the cat that spent 3 weeks with the family's belongings in the cargo? Moving just sucks, but if you're settled in and you have the space, I wouldn't see too much problem with 3. Just after you get too many they can get sick off each other and create a lot more poop, lol!

Twos company, and three is a crowd. Four is a riot. Five is a disaster waiting to happen.

Well I think it depends on how big your living space is. If your in a small apartment. One or two is plenty. But if you live in a fairly big home. Then I'd say 4 is the limit. My mother lives in a big victorian-style farmhouse. She has 4 cats and 2 small dogs in the house. But she's a neat freak and cleans constantly. So most people dont even realize she has any animals in there in the first place. So it really depends on how well you keep up with them, how well you take care of them, etc. Then you prolly could stand to have several in your home. Depends who you ask tho.

Since I live in a small apartment, I think I'll just keep my two, and maybe get another when we get moved into a house. Thanks for responding.

Did it ever occur to you that your husband may be feeling neglected? If he feels that way, of course, he wouldn't want to "share you" with another pet that would take up more of your time and your "love". A lot of times, guys don't say what they mean and we have to try to figure out what they are really saying. It may be time to "step back" and take an "objective" look at how you treat you cats and how you treat your husband.

Well, I have seen both men and women who lavish affection on their pets and practically ignore their spouse and/or their children. So, I felt it should be mentioned. A lot of them would deny it, if it was mentioned, or they would say that it was because they were not getting any affection from their spouse; so they were getting it from their pets. If this is not the reason he says no more cats; have you asked him "why"? Maybe he would like a different type of pet? Maybe he is concerned about costs? You'll never know "why" if you do not ask him and talk it out. Maybe you will end up with another cat or maybe you won't? But, if you don't know "why"; you will just end up resenting him and/or defying him and getting another cat anyway.

I might consider that if he spared any time for me. He is always so busy that I am the one who gets left out. Perhaps I want another pet as something to give me the attention my husband doesn't. I am always doing things for and taking care of him, but he doesn't recipricate to me. At least my cats come sit in my lap and purr from time to time--they spend more time with me than my husband does. He is too busy with school, his friends, and other things to spare me a thought. But that is another discussion for another time. Thanks for your insight, I certainly appreciate you commenting.

Clarence - This furry creature is my visiting stray who gets more friendly with my other cats every day!
Well as the proud "mother" of 5 cats (and a visiting stray who gets more "friendly" every day!), I would say - you can never have too many of the gorgeous creatures! But I guess it depends on your situation. If you have a large enough house and garden, and the money to pay the Vet bills and buy food, then I would say you can have as many as you like! But if you can't afford to give that many cats the proper food and medical attention they need, then maybe stick to one or two! I know one girl who has 6 of them in a small bedsit (one room plus kitchen and bathroom), but they go out a lot and everything is fine!!

Well my man knows the score......... if I had to choose between him and any of my fur babies - tey would win every time!!!!LOL! He loves cats though - so he doesn't mind my family - in fact I think he spoils them more than I do!!!

It looks like this question may have been answered but I will add my opinion in . There are many factors in considering how many cats a person should own. I have stated factors not necessarily in any particular order of importance and these are questions any one could ask themselves . 1) how much room do you have, do you an apartment or a house and how large is your home? 2) do you live in the city or the a rural area 3) how much time do you have to spend with them - are you home all day or do you work long hours ? 4) are they indoor or outdoor cats 5)the size of your family and how do your cats react to each family member, does someone in your family have an intense dislike or an allergy to them 6)how much disaposable income do you have? When owning a cat or any pet you must remember to factor in cost. (in our early years we nelgected to do this and found out we didn't always have the resources that we needed to properly care for the pet.) Consider the cost of food, toys , medicene for fleas, ticks, worms and other pest that a cat might pick up. They need at least yearly needles to keep them healthy. Then consider how much you can afford to pay if they get sick or in accident .(I shudder when someone relates how their cat may have gotten sick or run over and they are required to pay 100's or 1,000's of dollars for treatments and surgery etc . ) I am sure I may have forgotten something but this is what comes to mind right now . By the way I currently own two cats, I personally would prefer to only have the one ,but my daughter really likes cats and we are attached to them both , so we will keep them unless circumstances force us to have to find a new home for one .

My supervisor where I used to work was a single man with 5 cats and I have heard of people having more of them than that. I guess you could look at it this way, you can never have too much love.

I think two cats is a good number but I wouldn't go too far past 3. After three cats, they begin to take over and they require a lot of care (well much more than 1) and some people aren't ready to handle all these cats and not only are you unhappy but so are you cats because they can't be cared for properly. Either way, if you do get another cat I hope you enjoy him and that he brings you pleasure...

I have 2 cats and my daughter has 8, so I'm not sure there is such a thng as "too many"! As far as the cats taking over, that's what cats DO, whether there's one or 100. In my opinion, whether to get another kitty depends on your CATS, whether they would be receptive to an addition to the family! If you're able to take care of them all and provide them with food and healthcare when needed and if you feel you have enough love to go around (and remember, it comes right back to you!), if your other kitties accept a new brother or sister, go for it!

I also have 2 cats and to be honest any more would be too many for us. We have a small appartment so any more and it would be crouded. You should consider the size of your place when adding a pet to your home.

The size of my apartment is my only concern. If we lived in a bigger place I would already have another kitty. I don't want them to be crowded they all need their own space.

I think two's a good number. They're good companionship for each other and for you.. double the fun, right? Three seems like a chore and is now tripling the mess and 4.. well, I think people with 4 indoor cats are totally nuts. That's 4 litterboxes to clean every day, 4 mouths to feed, 4 water dishes to keep filled, 4 warm bodies you have to move off the bed/couch before you lay down, 4 times the ruckus and catfights if they don't get along or have a disagreement. I'd have to agree with your husband.. 2 is perfect. Although I'm sure he thinks no cats are perfect.. he sounds like he might be the kind of guy that's emasculated by having 2 cats and no dog. Some friends of mine adopted a starving, frostbitten kitten this last winter and took him into their dual cat household.. it's been horrible. Although he's a good kitten, the other 2 cats hate the concept of another cat infringing on their territory (it's a nice sized house, too) and the cat hair is unbelievable for 3 short haired cats. I'm not allergic at all, but it even gets to me. People, like my boyfriend, who are seriously allergic, can't handle their house even though they are meticulous about vacuuming (how can they not be with 2 robot vacuum cleaners?) and have leather furniture. I have 1 dog and 2 cats in my house, and although my boyfriend prefers cats over dogs any day, the dog hair and dander bothers him less.

It depends on how many you can care for and how much love you have to share. I have two and I feel that's all I can properly care for right now. There is also another that comes around and I feed her(or him). I don't think she is well cared for by her owners, which to me is terrible. Be sure you can care for more before you get them. Blessings.

It depends. If you live in a house, with a great garden and your cats sleep outside, I would say 20. I had this amount once. Some of them I didn't see for days because they liked to wander. Anyway, my situation was very different from the reality of your country. I live in Brasil. We don't have hard winters. And our gardens are part of the property, and it is surrounded by fences. So the cats usually just stayed in the property. If you live in an apartment, I think you should not have more than 5 cats.
