New Science Teacher

United States
July 6, 2007 10:18pm CST
This morning, our superintendent brought in the new middle school Science Teacher to my office to meet me. He sat down and we began to talk about the school he'd come from, where he'd grown up and things like that. Within a 15 minute time frame, we had a list of about 50 mutual friends from across the state of Arkansas...but he and I had never met before! I thought that was really cool and wondered if this was just a Paula thing...or if it had happened to any of ya'll?

See I can understand that...but this man just moved here from a town that is about 3 hours away! That's what blew my mind. But, he's a preacher...and so is my husband and that's where most of our mutual friends were found were in churches that we'd both been involved with over the years.

That is interesting if he lived over 3 hours away before. I know it still neat meeting someone and they know a lot of the same people you do. It's pretty cool to me.

it was kind of neat. Especially after we got to talking and he started saying "Do you know..." and it was people that I hadn't seen, heard or even thought about in many years.

oh that is neat . You know I have seldom gone anyplace in the country that I did not meet someone who knew someone else that we knew. It is even more frequent if the people are Christians. Now 50 mutual friends is a huge number.Did you go to the same school or college or what ? IN 15 minutes you found all this out ? You both must really like to gab . and that is not a bad thing .

All I answered this discussion from the email and then I read the rest of the comments. Ha , he was a preacher well that answers it . We know a gazillion people just because my husband is a preacher.

Isn't that the truth? lol There are many people who know me through my husband. Last weekend, I was in the grocery store and went to write a check to pay for my food. The little girl at the register looked at my check and said "Oh cool...is your husband the Mike Carpenter who is the new pastor at Trinity? My aunt goes there."

Sounds like that Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game. It happens occasionally to me, but not to such an extent as it did with you and the new teacher. That's really cool, and probably makes him feel more welcome already!

I think he's going to make a wonderful addition to our school. We have several new faculty members this year that are just going to be great for the kids. I think they're going to soar under their guidance.

actually, it's not that small. Just happen to know many of the same people. Our town has about 45,000 people and there are close to 20,000 in the town where he came from. Not huge cities by any means, but not one where you would know the whole town. Now, having said that, we have pastored in towns where there were less than 4,000 citizens, and we did know alot of people in that town!
