Driving lessons

July 7, 2007 4:04pm CST
Well today is the first day of the rest of my life! I got rhough my prvisional drivers license and I can now legally go on the roads - with supervision of course. Does anyone have any advice for me to help me on my way? How many lessons and how many attempts did it take you to pass?

My advice for you would be just to have lots of patience. And be very cautious of other drivers. You can not control the way other people drive so you have to constantly watch what's going on around you to avoid accidents. Good luck to you!

I passed my test after my first try, it's really the easiest thing on earth. You have nothing to worry about! Just make sure you do this: 1. After you cut someone off, make sure to give a 'Thanks-for-letting-me-in' wave or nod to the other driver. 2. Always drive 15 miles over the speed limit, unless you see a cop. 3. Turning signals are overrated, never use them. Haha! I kid of course! Something that has always helped me while out on the road is knowing the rules. Knowing when you can't make a right on red for example, knowing when you have the right of way, knowing when you don't. Sometimes people don't have the first idea on right of way issues and they just go - which can easily cause an accident. Also know what the street signs mean exactly, I get so annoying when someone stops at a yield sign. Also practice merging lanes, I used to have a lot of trouble merging in the past. And lastly don't be afraid, and drive everywhere (even if it's a block) so you can slowly learn to drive with better confidence. Much luck! :)

Lol Melody. Even your good advice made me laugh because I am in the UK and we never ever ever turn right or anything on a red light. Red light means stop everyone cos we drive on the different side of the road from your country so if we were turn we would be cutting up other traffic all over the place. I bought myself one of these DVDs that let you practice so I know I am pretty much there with the theory and stuff like that. Thank you.

OH. I never thought about how it wouldn't be possible to turn right on red in the UK...LOL. Though even if I knew that I had no idea you lived there soooo! Haha. I'm sure you'll fair just fine! Just make sure to always drive while on your cellphone, people love that! =P

Well, things were a lot simpler when I learned to drive, can't remember how many lessons I had, probably around 20, they cost 75p each (for 45 minutes). I passed first time. I would say try to be relaxed when driving, and not to play too loud music, (you might not hear other cars warning horns, or police fire or ambulance) and try to be aware of other road users including cyclists and pedestrians, they tend to pop out unexpectedly.

Oh how wonderful for you - I just can't imagine what it would be like to not drive. Honestly I took drivers training in school when I was 15. I never had to repeat any tests and got my permit the day I turned 16 (legal driving age in US). My best advice would be to always pay attention to what is going on around you - you can be the best driver in the world but there are a lot of crazy people on the roads and if you are paying attention to what they are doing you can avoid a lot of problems down the road.

Oh we are lucky (I think) in the US we can get learners permit at 15 (have to have a liscensed driver with you but you can drive) then at 16 can get full permit. I don't know jimbo. I've seen the name around here but not familiar with him or his forum. Things have been crazy around the house so haven't been on line much lately.

How old are you? Uhm, I have had my learners permit for almost 8 months and had to take drivers ed to be able to be allowed to get my drivers licence in 8 months instead of a year. My advice for you is to not get flustered whenever your driving. Thats a problem that I had.
