well surely they don't beleive that the statue itself is their God. I'm sure it's a point of focus. symbolic. after all, Deity is everywhere, so placing an offering before the statue is symbolic, rather than expecting a statue to do anything with it.

As far as idols go. People worship many things. When someone puts other things before God that can be considered an idol. In Christianity, God comes first. When people lay out of church to watch the superbowl on Sunday, that can be considered an idol. It was put before God. You don't have to actually worship something in order to consider it an idol.

I think it is because people want to see something tangible. God is a spirit, and therefore invisible to the mortal eye. Only when we die and take on the spirit form, do we see HIM as HE truly is. Not only cannot the mortal see God in his spiritual form but the sight of HIM would kill you. From what I heard about idolatry, the form or statue is a representative of their god. So if someone is praying to Venus to grant them a wonderful husband, Venus is still on Mount Olympus, but her statue or representative must have some sort of communication device that goes directly to the goddess herself. However we can speak to God directly and HE does not need a microphone inserted in a statue of HIM nor any other device to let HIM hear us and for HIM to answer our requests.
