I have read something like this, I think from a newspaper column of Philippines Star. It was a column of the daughter of Max Soliven, I forgot her name for now.
The main reason why Rizal got killed by the Spanish officials was because other rebel who got caught were telling his name as the brain of the coming revolution. Now, who told this peasants about Rizal? They were actually Bonifacio and his men. In an act to inspire more members of the revolutionary force, they were using the name of Rizal as the brain of the revolution. Rizal was not actually agreeing to the revolution sensing that a bloodshed could occur because the people were not ready yet. But Bonifacio insisted for the revolution.
It is now said that the revolution was started by Bonifacio, inspired by Rizal and finished by Aguinaldo.

That could be true. But we were not there witness. It's all according to history and reports.
But to guess, we all judge rizal to be of calmer personlity than the other two. The two are revolutionary and I personally don't like their personas as can be perceived from the things they do. There is even an artcle about Aguinaldo, which make me hate him (not written by JPR)
Reading from his novels, I think JPR is best chosen as a hero. Being more educated which he strived to do to better, to understand the world, i think he is indeed a man to serve an example. bad people will always do bad. That's why he get killed.
