My husband and I are currently in the discussion about getting a dog. My mom has a golden retriever and a terrier. His uncle has a lab. All are great with my three month old. Can anyone else give suggestions? THANKS

I have had a dalmation for many years now, she has always been sweet. I also has a west highland terrior. He loves to run and play, he does like to use hands as a 'toy' if you will, but I do this with him constantly and even when I stop moving conpletely he acts like he is going to bite my hand but he just puts it in his mounth, no pressure what so ever.

I think it's going to depend on the individual dog's personality. I have a black lab/pit bull or chow mix, sweetest dog in the world. But she's old now, 13 I believe, and she's fine with my young daughter(19 months) except when my daughter pokes her or something. She gives a little growl or a bark if she startles her, but never bit or nipped at her. I also have a german shepherd/yellow lab mix male, and when I first brought my daughter home, he thought she was a cat or something, and I thought we were going to have to get rid of him. But, he's done great, and now my daughter absolutely terrorizes him lol, and he lets her, just following her around everywhere :) I even caught her one day sticking her finger in his eye, and he just sat there taking it....labs are great dogs, but can be hyper. Shepherds are great dogs as well, very protective. Those are the only types I've ever had, so all I can speak of. Are you looking to get a puppy to grow up with the baby? That would probably be best regardless of the dog type, but puppies are kinda nippy when young. And obviously I'm sure you know, don't leave a dog or any animal alone with a baby.

We have a yorkshire terrier that stays inside and she's fine with my son. He will try to pull her hair and she'll just go get under the bed and get away from him. She's never tried to bite him or anything like that. We have a lab outside too and she's good with my son too but she's so big I wouldn't let her be an inside dog cause I wouldn't want her to knock him down when he's trying to walk. So if you get a dog, I might would stick with the small ones. Just read up about them and see how they are with kids. I've read that terriers don't really like to be messed with by children. I don't know how true that is because mine does just fine with my child.
