Adult children of mothers with borderline personality disorder

I'm interested if there any other people out there who have parents with what appears as borderline personality disorder. It has only been in the past few years that my siblings and I have figured out that our mother presents those kinds of characteristics. She is in her 70s, high functioning and has never been diagnosed as is true for many people with borderline traits. She changes how she presents herself depending on what she thinks will get her what she wants. She can present herself as loving one minute, a shrew the next, as an old woman who can't do anything on her own, etc. etc.

That sounds scary. I don't know much about that particular mental illness. Does she know she is being manipulative? Or is it, in essence, who she is?

for a long time we thought it was just who she was and that is the difficult part, because it is a mixture of who she is and since we think she must have developed this as a young person, it's difficult to tell the difference. there are some excellent websites out there with more information about this. it's a part of the low spectrum of personality disorders and is often never really diagonosed or treated. such a personality either hates or loves, feels everything is great or awful, etc., and changes how they present themselves depending on what they think will work with each person. and, yes, it is highly manipulative.
