Foul and Fair in Shakespeare and Tolkein

The contra-positioning of these two adjectives resonates through Shakespeare's play, Macbeth and is also found in Tolkein's Lord of the Rings. Often it can seem that those that seem on first encounter to be sweet and fair hid a black and treacherous heart and those that seem rough and abrasive are most loyal and trustworthy.
