How would you react to this ?

You had boarded a bus or a train and occupied an empty seat. You were reading the daily newspapers, a magazine or a novel and suddenly the passenger sitting beside you fell asleep on your shoulder ! Had you ever encountered the incident described above ? How did you react to that ? Did you try to wake that person up, ask him/her to move to another seat or do you try to find and occupy another empty seat ? Did you ignore that person and continue with what you were doing ? What were your reactions to this ? How did you feel about that ? Had you ever fallen asleep on other people's/ stranger's shoulder in a bus, train, etc... Please share your experiences.

I would probably wake them up if they really fell asleep. But most would be awake by the time they fell on my shoulder. This is the main reason why I first check out the person before I sit at their side. I wouldn't want to slap a man for falling on me. *LOL* I had this experience before at a public transport. Here in the Philippines, we have what we call "jeep" it's a long vehicle and passengers sit at a long seat. There are 2 long parallel seat facing each other, so the people riding the jeep would be facing each other. Anyways, some guy was sleepy and was beside me, several times he's fall asleep but was able to control his sleepiness. Until one point, the man in front of me decided to exchange his seat with mine because the guy might fall off to me. Wasn't that sweet? hehehe.. oh well.

Yes, it is wise to check before you sit next to a person. He could be a "monster". LOL (just kidding). It was very fortunate that a kind gentleman was willing to exchange seats with you. Did you thank him for that ?

No one ever fell asleep on my shoulder and I never fell asleep on anyone's shoulder. When I did doze, I was always looking towards the window as I tried to get the window seat. I gather you are not talking about an airplane where they assign a seat. I have no idea what I would do, except to nudge him so he can shift his head elsewhere. It is hard to tell him or her to move to another seat, since he or she was just tired. It isn't as if he were accosting me.

Yes, I agree that it is hard to tell a person to move to another seat.

That's never happened to me and I don't THINK I've ever fallen asleep on anyone :D If someone did fall asleep on my shoulder though I would just let them be, poor thing. If they're that tired I'd feel sorry for them and let them catch some Zzz's ;) If I were on a plane I might ring a flight attendant to give me some pillows and prop them up, but if it were a bus I'd just let them be.

It's never happened to me but I would say something if it was uncomfortable. If it wasn't I would just let it go.

If a person sleeps on my shoulder I would look at the type of the person. If it is a small girl or boy, I would just let them sleep. The same goes if it is a woman or an old lady, as long as their saliva doesn't come out and spoil my shirt! Lol... but if it is a man, I would definitely change place to another seat. I feel uncomfortable if a stranger (man) sleeps on my shoulder.

Oh dear, hopefully the worst case scenario of a stranger man with saliva coming out of his mouth does not happen to every lady passenger who sits beside a man !

this has happened to me several times before, on the bus, on the mrt, on a jeepney, and its always a guy that does it (perhaps its harder for men to control their urge to sleep) anyway, what i always do is try to make small movements, just enough to wake him up. if this doesn't work, i move away, practically letting him drop onto the seat i vacated. it may sound rude but isn't it even more rude to sleep on a complete stranger's shoulder? talk about invasion of personal space!!! i myself always make sure that i get to sit near a window or anywhere i could lean on when i'm sleepy, or i slump on the bag i'm carrying and go right out to sleep just to make sure i don't lean on the person sitting next to me.

I would nudge them a little bit to try and wake them up but if they continued to fall asleep on my shoulder after numerous attempts to get them to stop then I would move while they were asleep so that they would fall over, lol!

Well, they will certainly fall over if we move away. I hope that they will wake up after some nudges.

Yes it's irritating although to some extent I tolerate if someone fell into my shoulder while on sleep during the train journey but not at all when they wet my shoulder. To this point I wake them up and and of course the sleepy passenger profusely apologise and clean the mess he created. It happened in a different manner to me once when I was travelling from Mumbai to Shirdi for a pilgrimage to Shirdi Sai Temple in a train. It was a six hours journey from my place. The train was fully packed. Although I reserved the ticked in advance, many other passengers had already found a place in the compartment. Being day time, nobody objected these unreserved commuters and no ticket examiners were at sight. Suddenly I felt shower and my whole body became wet. Curiously enough I looked at the upper portion where we keep our luggage, there was one girl hardly six years old found a place there to sit during the journey and accidently urinated without even her knowledge. I was angry but never lost my temper because the artificial shower creator was a little girl. But my ire directed against her parents for not being taken the little girl to the toilet before travel. Those co passengers witnessed this episode also blamed her parents since the girl even requested her parents to take her to the toilet because she could not bear it very long till the next station as what she was told when they reach their destination. Her parents did not want to wade through the passengers as it was fully packed compartment and they didn't want to trouble other passengers. However, I proceeded my journey till Shirdi and in the hotel I had the real showever before I go to the temple for my pilgrimage. We may have different experiences in train, buses, or any other public transport with our co passengers, our patience should be in the premise of maximum tolerance after taking into account the situations under which these unpleasent things happened unknowingly or accidently.

Thank you for sharing your interesting encounter. It was very kind of you to tolerate the wet "showers" from the little girl. The parents of the little girl should have brought her to the toilet before boarding the train. Our society needs more tolerant, patient and understanding people so that everyone can enjoy peace and harmony.

It happened to me on a plane ride. I couldn't do anything about it like changing seats, so I just let their head lie on my shoulder. But I have to say, when their arm went in my lap, I pushed it back to their own. I won't let that pass!

It has happened to be quite a few times before too. Unless it is really a situation that someone looking would think us lovers, I will let the person sleep while bearing the inconvenience. I have been in the tired person's shoes before so I understand. When I was a student, this happened especially often. There were times when some b*tchy lady would raise her voice in the train and embarrass me out of my sleep. I don't apologise for being tired but I pity such ladies for their uncivilized manners (or lack of).

Raising one's voice on a sleepy person is really rude. Thank you for providing the "kind support" to the sleepy and tired passengers. :D

before, i had several experiences when somebody fell asleep on my shoulder when i was riding the bus from the city to my hometown. luckily, they get instantly awake even if move or nudge my shoulder a bit... coz it gets heavy as time passes. if it's my brother, sister or a friend of mine, i don't mind... but it's a no-no if it's a stranger... with an exception of an old lady. :) i've never fallen asleep on a stranger's shoulder before, precisely because i know how embarrassing it is. :)

Yes, it is very embarrassing to fall asleep on a stranger's shoulder. It is also very irritating if a stranger fell asleep on our shoulder as it can be very uncomfortable especially if your journey is long.

Hi there. I would probably yell out "Oy!!! Wake Up!!!" and get off my shoulder... There would be no way anyone would have a chance of falling of 2 sleep with me next to them, because I enjoy talking and meeting people LOL... He would probably either block his ears and pull his hair out, move seats or be a good sport and join in the conversation LOL...

That would certainly wake him up ! Hopefully, he is a good sport and join in the conversations.

I have fallen asleep on other people and had the same happen to me when I was in high school. I didn't always know these people very well either. If it was a rally or something I would jest let the person sleep, but normally during class I would wake them up to get them off of me because I would then be distracted because of them. In this situation I think it would depend on the person, if they were gross I'd wake them up but if it was a little old lady or a young kid or a mom or dad with small kids I would let them sleep unless there was a problem.

Yes, I agree with you. It depends on the situation and we should use our discretion. In fact, if you wake up a sleepy person in class, you are also helping him/her to pay attention to the lessons being taught.

I would gently wake them up and make them aware that they were sleeping on my shoulder. If it were to happen again after that one warning, I would change seats. If no other seats were available I would probably just get off the vehicle. If it was a train that was a long distance trip that I could not escape, I'd speak with the conductor or someone else in charge.

I do not like people touching me, and if I encountered such a situation, I think I would not hesitate to him to wake up. Of course, there are exceptions, I would not do so if the other party is a child...lol......

Hello wealth!I've had countless experience with that kind. I didn't wake them. I just endured it. Some were pretty harmless but there was a time with this guy. It was so obvious that he was just pretending that he's fast asleep. And he kept on leaning on me. At first, I moved my shoulder to "wake" him up. Then he leaned on me again. When I couldn't take it anymore, I stood up and looked for another vacant seat. I usually endure this kind of situation. Because I've done it too. There was a time that I was so tired from work that as soon as I have seated myself on the bus, I nodded off to sleep. I woke up with my head leaning so comfortably on this kind old man. He just smiled at me when I apologised. He said that it was ok because it was obvious that I needed to sleep.Praises for people like him.^_^

Hi my friend, From your response, I think you are a very kind and understanding person because you are able to endure this situation. I am also thankful to others who are so understanding when we are genuinely tired and fell asleep on them. :D
