dormitory life in college

My son is visiting a state college for a 5 week summer program for which he will receive free tuition within his home state when he attends college in 2008. I am grateful for this financially, but when I deposited him in his residence hall, I nearly passed out in his delapidated room. I wasn't expecting the RITZ, but not something that I'd condemn either! I believe Freshman need decent living conditions to enhance their success. If I were paying for this, I'd be going ballistic. Have you visited local colleges with your prospective hgih schoolers? What are you opinions and/or suggestions?
