Oh no you must try and see the dietitian some of the gp's think they know it all just because they are doctors. Dietitians (qualified) do a 5 year university course. But another question, have you had your thyroid tested?

Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble. Have you seen a specialist and are you on any medications? I am a type 1 diabetic and I have been told when your blood sugar is very high it will make you insulin resistant. Also another common problem I have is being insulin resistant in the morning. Adjustments in my insulin dose during those times seems to help. As for weight loss I did find that once I was more aware of the carbs I am eating (insulin doses for meals are based on amount of carbs I am eating) I started to lose weight. For me it all seems to be about the carbs If I limit them and make sure to only eat the "good" carbs weight isn't an issue. The South Beach Diet which was originally developed for heart patients has been very effective for diabetics and the same doctor has a book out explaining the difference between good carbs and bad carbs. I would urge you though to get professional help and advice. Good luck to you I hope you get some good advice and start feeling better soon!

i am not completely sure how it works for me. my cells refuse insulin, and burns the immediate foods that i take in. the rest that it doesnt burn goes to my midsection as fat. when i dont eat, i feel lethargic and feel like sleeping as my body doesnt burn any of the stored fat as the cells are insulin resistant. i do take glucophage but the past year it has made no difference. i do excercise but it seems to have no effect at all.

I can't help you, with a diet but haven't you got a diabetic center near you, or perhaps a dietitian. My husband is following a dietitian's diet and he is doing very well on it at the moment. I am not that much overweight but because I'm in my late forty's I am also battling do get my weight down.sigh!

we get a dietician here once a week. i shall try to get an appointment. the insulin resistance is basically pre diabetes. but my body stores more than it burns. i have no energy and eat practically nothing. i have tried the doctors diet but have gained 20 kg in the past year alone.

If it is available in your country, see if you can get on byetta. My roomie is on it with pretty good results. She has been able to cut way down on her insulin useage & her blood sugars are way down too.

I'm with you; I need the same advice. Sorry I don't have any to give you but whoever responds to your discussion will be helping me too. I keep gaining too - I have gained over 50 pounds over the last 6 years. It just creeps on slowly but surely and I have to keep buying bigger clothes. I'm really getting tired of it and I am ready to start losing whatever it takes. I've even considered surgery, but that would be a last resort. Good luck to you.

Eat small meals often, low on carbs - get enough proteins, do weight training/exercise, and try to accept yourself. Maybe eat some ALA-pills. I am insuline resistant too, and have been gaining and gaining weight for several years. I have ME as well - so I cannot exercise. During the last few months the weight gain seems to have slowed down a bit - but I am still not loosing any. I have been on a strict diet that is low on bad carbs: no bread, rice, poatatoes, pasta, no refined sugar (only sugar in fruits). I basically eat vegetables and yoghurt and berries. I should have some more fish and chicken than I do now - but right now it just makes me nauseous. Another very important thing is to eat often enough. I used to eat very little too - it just slowed my metabolism down even more. We should try to eat every three hours or so - and be sure to get enough proteins. If you are able to do some weight training it will be even better! Some insuline resistant people benefit from Alpha Lipoic Acid. I did not - but it might be worth a try. I hope you will be able to get controle of the weight gain! I know it is a horrible feeling to keep gaining no matter what you do. Knowing I do everything I can, and everything that the dietician tells me to, make me feel a bit better. I know I am not eating the wrong food, too much food. I know I am not lazy. It is hard work and very frustrating to be insuline resistant. My partner lost more than 40 pounds in half a year when we changed our diets - I still gained. So I know I must be doing something right. It just does not work that well for me.

i do try the small meals. its difficult at work though. and i cant do weight training. i have a broken left arm and broken right leg. it never healed. been like that for 5 years now. i am full of metal keeping me together. but i do leg lifts, sit-ups and a little tae-bo. i shall just have to try harder at everything.

Zorrogirl, I have a suggestion for you. It's safe for diabetics since it doesn't involve a change in diet or any pills. I've tried it just to tone up, but one of my friends has used it to lose 15 pounds and she is still losing. Go to www.wraps2riches.com We used the ulimate body wraps and the defining gel. I know, wraps are generally water loss, but these aren't. Michelle (my friend who has lost the weight) gave me a few tips for my next ones. It says wear for a minimum of 45 minutes, but longer is better. She just wears her to bed then uses the gel in the mornings and evenings. You need to drink a lot of water. The wrap breaks up toxins/inflammation, so you have to flush them out of your system before they are absorbed again. Hope this helps!
