Would you say something?

I was with my best friend a few years ago visiting her family in DC. Her father had a beach house that we spent a few days at. One evening, after dinner, My frined and I had some hot chocolate (from the single serve packages). Now we have all had this problem one time or another... weavels. Or rather the empty skins they leave behing in a pantry when food sits a bit too long. So we are sitting there with our hot chocolate, and as I lift my mug to take the first sip, I see weavel skins floating on the top of the liquid, as well as some on the mug from the dry powder. Um... not about to drink that!! We are sitting around talking, so no one is paying attention to our drinks. I glance at my friend's drink and see that she also has many floaters, but is drinking away, oblivious. The delima... do I say something and embarrass our host and hostess, as well as probably make my friend sick, since she had been drinking them? Or do I keep quiet? I wasn't about to drink mine, and she even commented about me not drinking it. I waited for a good moment to slip away from the table and poured my drink in the sink. I rinsed the mug and returned to the table. As soon as my friend was finished, I took hers also and rinsed it so no one would see the floaters stuck to the sides of the mug. I have never, to this day breathed a word of this!! Was that wrong? Should I have let her drink all those weavels?

I am very sensitive to things like that. Knowing me, I would have commented first and thought better of it later. Sitting there watching my friend drink bugs are whatever weavels are would have made me sick. This kind of thing can happen to anyone. I would speak up, so she would never embarass herself like that again.

I sat there though the whole conversation debating on what to do. Maybe I could have taken her aside and told her, without her parent's having to be embarrassed about it... hmmm. Oh well, too late now.

Yeah, I guess it was a pretty tough call. It might have actually made things worse if you had said something. She could have started throwing up and got really sick from the thought of it. I am sure we have all eaten a bug or two in our lives.

Of course it would have been easier if she had just noticed them herself. Or if her parents had seen the tiny holes in the package and checked first. But I guess I'm more conscious of weavels because I have had many experiences with them. I guess the only way to prevent them is eat food faster. Which is a funny thing to say considering the discussion I started about how long food sits in my pantry...

Weavels - If you saw the skin of this floating would you say something? I would.
I would have quietly whispered into my friend's ear that she was drinking them. I would have told her to wait for a good moment like you did to get up from the table and pour it out. I think you should have been responsible for telling her what she was drinking. If you did it correctly, I don't think you would have embarrassed the hosts. It could have been done without causing a huge scene.

I can't imiagine her not noticing them either! There were plenty of them to catch her eye, but she didn't see. Or maybe she noticed something, but wasn't concerned about it... Who knows.
