Do you cover your mouth with your hands while speaking on a phone?

I have seen people cupping their hands over the phone's mouth peice while speaking, it is to prevent others from hearing your conversation. Are you in habit of doing that, does it really help or is it just a common habit.

i do cover my mouth sometimes while speaking on the phone but only when i am on a mobile phone. never using the landline. i do this sometimes because i am afraid people might hear me talking loudly on the phone. usually when i am in the mall or in places where there are other people and they can hear me pretty well, i try to cover my mouth so that they won't be bothered by me. it's so annoying to see someone on their mobile, talking loudly, even giggling with their mouths wide open! haha :)

Dear dbhattji, I never do such a things while talking over phone. I am a open book. Therefore, I do not need to conceal anything from anybody. I always talk loudly over phone. I do not mind if others hear my conversation. Our family principle is always be open while talking, doing anything. It is our decision to do things. It is none of others to interfere with our thoughts, things and action. Therefore all my brothers and sisters always talk loudly over the phone.

I always try to speak softly when talking on my cell phone. In fact the opposite user can hear us clearly if we speak with soft and clear voice. Yeah, sometimes when speaking on my cell phone in the public I would cover my mouth unconsciously lol ...

Covering telephone receiver - Even covering the receiver like this won't prevent sounds from going to the other end.
I have seen people doing this but I have to say it does not make much difference really apart from show others that you are trying to mask your conversation. Usually by putting your hand around the receiver you are sending muffling sounds to the person on the other end, which can actually be quite annoying.

Well I had never considered that, I always thought that the phone lines were not working properly if I had difficulty in hearing.

I don't do that, but when I am in a public transportation I talk not so loud, so I would not disturb others with my converation. Here in Latvia I don't see such habbit so often.
