My mother was diagnosed having alzheimers when she was 75 years old. Since that time up to the present she just turned 83 years old her physical appearance has deteriorated so much and even her mobility is totally gone. everything has to be done for her. i don't want to have this kind of sickness so i'm asking if its hereditary.

Yes, alzheimers is heridetary. Im sorry to tell you this but its the truth. However there ways you prevent it from happening, but it's not a guarantee that we can stop it if you have it. Just like it's not a guarantee also that one or both of your parents has one, you will have one too. I guess that's a relief. Just live a healthy life style, especially now that you know you are prown to having one, God forbid. Keep safety!

I have read it can be but it doesn't mean you will get it, my mother had it and the doctors told me it is possible but it can also depend on how you keep using your brain and they told me it is a muscle and muscles must be worked, use it or lose it they said...anyway there are a lot of medicals things happening today, I think they are just about on to a break through....

I have heard that it is supposed to be hereditary, but that you might be able to prevent it or at least delay it by keeping your mind active. There are also some sort of vitamins that you should take which are also supposed to help, but I don't remember which ones. You can research this online though.

I'm sorry for your mom. My grand mother has been diagnosed with this disease too, same with her sister. My own mother started this year forgetting things a lot... We suspect that she might be getting Alzheimers too. So I do think that it is hereditary and I share the same concern like you. Of course it doesn't mean we will necessarily get it but there is a chance... I have heard that if you keep exercising your mind and keeping yourself active it might help. Take care!

is it what you meant by 'hereditary' is had anything to do with 'genetic'? if your question meant 'is it alzheimer genetically pass on family', then the answer is no, because alzheimer had nothing to do with any DNA disorder. the reason why sometimes some diseases appears to be pass on family while it had nothing to do with genetic, is because family often pass on the risk factor to have that disease. so, the possibility here is you shared the same risk factor that your mom have. with her, that risk factor was eventually developed and takes effect and your mom was diagnosed having alzheimer. ith you, that risk factor can be develop too, but there's a chance that it won't. so you better focus yourself on the prevention. oh, and i don't think the gingko biloba will take any effect. gingko will only makes more blood to flow to your brain. the key here is to make your brain to stay active. do some scrabble or puzzle and play some chess will do for you.

There are always ways to preventing it, if you have an active life, read newspapers, articles, something easy and fast.If you some time, read books, and if you only can read them before going to bed, do it. If you exercise your brain (reading books, newspapers, articles, crosswords, puzzels) your memory (the one that is very popular - the one finding the pairs), there is less chances of having alzheimer. That doesn't mean, you will have. I am a biology student, and i have genetics, so i study heredity. You need to have some genes that command that disease. Do a balanced diet, read something (try to read all days - it can be only 5-10 mins, but at least you read something). I hope i helped in some way, don't think a lot about it, it always makes you worse.
