Do you maintain a distinction between your gf/bf with your lover/sweetheart?

I maintain a strict distinction between a girl friend and alover/sweetheart.I am a guy and I have several friends who are girls as I have completed my education from coeducation school, college, then university and now working with lot of female colleages who are also my good friends.But there is a bigdifference according to me between a gf and a lover/sweetheart.Am I wrong in my understanding?If you think I am wrong please help me rectify myself, also would like to hear from you if you want to add something.
