Chicken Soup - Not just for Colds

So I don't feel like going to the grocery store, so I go to the nearby Walgreens. I needed a few things, and I didn't want to get fast food for dinner, so I looked around for something at Walgreens. All of the stuff looked greasy and fattening. Then I stumble upon the soup. Good 'ol Chicken Soup. I don't have a cold, not a sniff within earshot. But I thought oh, why not. It's low calories. Well, that chicken soup was delicious. I had purchased Campbell's Chicken and little round noodle Soup. My only complaint was the amount of sodium it had, but most soups do have a lot of sodium. Progresso might not, but I don't like Progresso. So anyway, I was wondering, does anyone else eat chicken soup when they are NOT sick? When it is not COLD weather, but hot? And what is the best chicken soup you have ever had? Perhaps some people don't eat chicken soup in their country, but have a different version of it. I'm all ears (and no sniffles)! : )

I don't mind Progresso soups..but I just love the good ole classic Campbell's..salty and all..hehe And no I never think to have soup in the summer though...in fact I really don't do much cooking in the summer,...I have been living on salads for awhile now...Since I don't have a/c to cook would only make the place hotter...As for the best chicken soup...why of course...my own homemade!! I especially love to add barely or rice to it.. lots of fresh veggies, seasonings...My uh, cats like it too and they are the true critics of my cooking...LOL

Hehe--they love soup--I used to have a bunch of cats that loved macaroni and cheese, pasta..and if I have a steak dinner of course I share it with them, otherwise they would just sit in front of me staring at me, as if to say.."Oh, are we getting any?" LOL

Chicken soup and soda - It's what's for dinner
Excellent discussion. It took me awhile to find the best store bought chicken noodle soup. Campbell's was too salty for me. I do not salt my foods. I am not big on Progresso. What I really like is...Alessi Traditional Brodo di Pollo Chicken Noodle Soup. It comes in a bag. It is creamy. It is the best. One serving size which is a cup has 70 calories, 0 fat grams. You will want to give this a try. I am not a meat eater. Anything that tastes fleshy is not something I like. This is chicken soup but it does not have that fleshy chicken taste. Chicken soup is not just for colds. It is a wonderful comfort food.

I'm so glad you replied. I have been wanting to find a soup with less sodium because it seems that is the highest component to these soups. I detest big chunks of chicken in my soup. My mom would get annoyed with me when I was growing up, because everything would be gone, but these big pieces of chicken. Thanks again, I'll be looking for that soup the next trip to the grocery store, which will hopefully be soon! : )

I went to both my health food store and my Walmart Supercenter and did not find the soup. What grocery store did you purchase the soup, if you don't mind me asking.

In my place I often prepare chicken soup for my hubby to eat. Some of the time I even make it for lunch. Here the weather is always hot and wet, and eating it during lunch hour will produce you with sweat! However, my chicken soup recipe is similar to your stews. The gravy is very light with no added creams. I will stew the chicken, add spices vegetables and that's all. My hubby likes it very much. He often eats two plates of rice if I prepare chicken soup.

I guess I don't eat too much chicken soup because I associate it with being sick as you mentioned! But I know that Campbell's has some kinds that are chunkier that I have tried in the past that were pretty good. I mostly eat veggies now, but when I did have that other soup, I thought it was tasty.

Good for you, eating the veggies. I have to force myself to eat vegetable soup, or for that matter, several different kinds of vegetables.

I love chicken noodle soup. I've always got a few cans on hand for a quick lunch or snack late at night. I don't mind the sodium, so have never tried to find a lower sodium brand of soup. I make my own chicken soup from scratch, and it's not so salty. I'll make it different ways, like sometimes I'll put banana pepper rings in to cook with the soup, and some chopped fresh tomatoes. I like to put a lot of carrots in my soup, and chopped celery. My husband picks out the carrots. Once when I was making soup, I had a bowl of sliced carrots ready to add to the soup, and he hid them.

Yeah, I had to threaten him with no dessert if he didn't tell me where he put the carrots.

I eat chicken soup all the time. I have to make it at least once or twice a month no matter how hot it is outside! I love soup? AS a matter of fact tonight I made hamburger and vegetable soup and it was a hot day? It was going to be chicken soup but I changed my mind!

I live chicken soup but I am not much of a soup eater even in the winter time. I like chicken broth if I have an upset stomach. I mostly eat tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches when I am in the mood for soup. But just the other day I spotted a can of chicken noodle soup in the cupboard and I have been tempted to eat it.

Yeah, it is good with a sandwich. Maybe that is where restaurants came up with their noon special, the soup and sandwich combo.

Yes, I eat chicken soup when I am healthy. I love it, as it is tasty, healthy & low fat. It is far better to have home made chicken soup. This is how I make it: Gently simmer some pieces of chicken in a saucepan. Add parsley stems, bayleaf & pepper. When at least half way through cooking process, add finely chopped potato, carrot & celery. Simmer for another 30 minutes. The end result is delicious & very good for sick people.

I too tried Campbell soup before and find it too salty for my liking. I do not drink it only when I am sick. I drink it whenever my mum cooks it. It is neither oily nor saltish.

I only eat chicken noodle soup when I'm sick or when it is cold. I agree with you, Campbells do have too much sodium. But my favorite is Progresso. I like the big chunks of noodles and the vegetables inside. And it don't have as much sodium as Campbells.

I love chicken soup. Campbell's is my favorite brand but I buy Dollar General brand a lot too. It is cheaper. We eat chicken soup when we are in need of a quick meal or when I need some comfort food. I also love Campbell's bean with bacon and I love cream of chicken.

I'm showing my ignorance here. I was brought up watching women cook with cream of chicken, but never eaten by itself. It never occurred to me that people ate it alone and not with a casserole or something. Boy, I'm slow!

I've never been a huge chicken noodle fan. When I was little and sick, I would always request tomato soup instead. But, my son and husband are huge chicken noodle fans and they do eat chicken noodle soup, all brands, year round.

I always eat soup, with vegetables and seafood if there is any. In summer I still do this, I know people might think something is wrong with me, since everybody gets ice cream and orange juices or fruits while I'm eating hot soup in a non AC room. I eat mostly chicken soup, chicken noodle, beef noodle, and pies. My husband is all fruits and ice creams and BBQ steak.
