We previously had an aquarium a few years ago, and it did great. We even managed to breed some guppies, and the fish tank did well until we moved. We just decided to re-establish another fish tank at our new house for our son. Well, we ended up winning 2 goldfish at a carnival, and it turned into wanting to start another tank. Anyway, I bought guppies for the tank, and put them together with the goldfish. i told the pet store my plan, and NO BODY said that goldfish and guppies couldn't be mixed. Apparently, gold fish throw off too much ammonia for the guppies (or any other fish to handle). So as of yesterday, 2 of the guppies had died. I came home today, and now all 5 of the other guppies that were doing so great last night are dead. The 2 gold fish are still living, but aren't looking so good. They kind of look like they have white spots on their tails, and I'm not sure if this is "ick" or some bacteria. I'm not sure now if the guppies died because of the goldfish, or if something else is going on with our tank. We just established this tank last Saturday and the water was purified before. We even used aquarium salts to purify the water the way the box sad, and the pet store suggested. Can anyone help me with this before the 2 gold fish die too? I dont know what to do! The fish tank water kinda looks cloudy, but not really? Thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

Gold fish can get of be over a foot long and live to be 35 years or so old if they are treated well. It does sound like ick that the goldfish have and that is right abut goldfish and tropical fish should not be kept together because the temp the the goldfish like is cooler than the tropical fish need. Goldfish should have at least a 30m gallon tank to live in. I know that sounds like a lot of water for goldfish but how do you think that you would do living in a closet? Yes you could stand up and maybe lie down to sleep but you would have a hard time getting the exercise that you needed. When you do water changes do not take all of the water out but rather only about 20 to 30% out at a time. and make sure that thee is no chlorine in the water that you put back in, they have drops to take care of the chlorine in water to make it safe for the fish.

I think I have heard that too about not sticking goldfish in with other fish. I also heard not too put too many in a tank ebcause they are dirty fish. We actually won a goldfish at a carnival too a few weeks ago. It is doing pretty good and the water isn't as dirty as I was expecting. It does sound like the white balls could be some kind of bacteria. I don't know if it is worth it to you but you can take a sample of the water to most pet stores and they can test it fr you and tell you what it is if anything.
