DISCLAIMER: This topic was posted twice before one month and six months ago and got very poor response. I am posting it again because it is of vital importance. If mylot wants to give the credit for the responses to the other posters, that would be fine with me. --------- Given the prevalence of breast cancer in my family and among my friends, I was shocked and embarrassed when I learned of the practice known as Drive Through Mastectomies. This term was coined to describe the unfairness and inhumanity of insurance companies, rather than doctors, deciding how long a woman can stay in the hospital to recuperate after mastecomy surgery. Shocked to discover women who have had a major surgery that leaves them temporarily physically impaired and emotionally scarred are often sent home within hours of the surgery. Imagine being in pain from having a prominent part of your body cut off, being dazed and confused from the after effects of the anesthia, being unable to lift your arms and then being told to go home and take care of yourself. Embarrassed that I knew nothing of this practice despite having had friends who have had this surgery. And embarrassed that I am part of a society that would allow it. Please visit this website and sign the petition. http://www.lifetimetv.com/breastcancer/petition/signpetition.php

My sister is right now helping care for a friend who just had a double mastectomy. Our health insurance industry stinks. Everything is drive-through now. The doctor should be the one who decides how long the patient stays, not the insurance company. I signed the petition and have forwarded the site to many of my friends who will also sign it. Thanks for bringing this up again. It IS very important.

Sadly it's not just with Mastectomies. Many, many of the surgeries done today are rushed through and people are discharged before they should be. I know my sister had surgery on her carotid artery and she was discharged within 24 hours even though she was in no state to be. The hospitals and doctors are out to make money and if they can short cut us they don't care about the patient. It's sad and considering everything about our country you'd think our health care industry would be better then it is.

I've heard over the past 10 years that many hospital stays are cut short and patients are sent home earlier than before to save money for the hospitals. I just hadn't heard about this one. Thanks for the heads up! I went and signed the petition!
