First hair cut

My son´s hair is getting rather scruffy and I´m too scared to cut it myself. But I´m also worried that he will flip out if I take him to a hair dresser! His hair is very fine and thin, but just long and I am terrified that if it isn´t cut by a pro, it will just look awful. I need ideas on how to make this a pain-free process. Any moms out there who have tips? My son is 19 months old and at the height of the tantrum phase.

Does his hair need styled in any way or just cut? Maybe getting a new small toy on the way to the barber would help. Just a little car or something like that. Then he would be busy playing with the new toy and not so inclined to fight. I never took my sons to get their hair cut. I always did the '1 finger military cut'. I would run my hand through their hair flat on their head so the hair stuck up through my fingers. Any that stuck over my 1 finger was too long and got cut. That way I was sure the hair was all the same length.

I don´t think any styling is necessary. I do want it to stay long in front to cover his forehead because it always has bruises and goosebumps! But in the back, he is getting a bit straggly. Plus, in the street, everyone says to me, "Oh, what a cute little girl you have!" :D Someone just told me to give him a bonbon to suck on while in the barber´s chair. Maybe a combination of that and a car!

That's definitely a thought. But with one that young maybe a lollipop would be better...less chance for choking.

Dear GuateMom! I'm just dropping here as you've posted the topic. I'm sorry not to respond the discussion, cause I have no kid yet (I'm still a single man, hehehe...). In my country Indonesia (specially for Javanese), to have first baby's hair cut is meaned to throw bad-luck away. So it's superstitious, isn't it? But, we usually do it though we don't mind very much of that superstition. I know, it must be careful to cut baby's hair. Yeah...just dropping here, Mrs. GuateMom. God bless you, kid(s) and family!
