What is your advice to people who need to plan for retirement? What are the main things to do?

We are planning our retrement. Our main way of planning is to have adequate superannuation. Both my husband & I have super. Also, I have an investment property & an investement portfolio. These are all part of our planning for retirement. We waqnt to buy a caravan & travel around Australia. We also want top live fairly comfortably, with adequate health cover. It is becoming more & more difficult to reach these goals. The Government want everyone to be sself funded in retirement.

You are certainly right, and its tougher to secure the huge amounts that they tell us we should have secured. I do not know how some will do it. We have to try to have at least some of it ready....

Since I don't have much saved for retirement, I am planning on earning an income as I age. I am working on a few ideas. If you haven't saved anything, you have to put some money away into some kind of savings. If you don't have any money to save, that is a problem. You might have to give up a few conveniences to get some extra cash to put into savings.

Your right, we have to sacrifice to make this what it needs to be. Since the cost of living keeps going up....the amount we need saved keeps going up....

Without sounding morbid if this earth does get hit in 2012 there's not much point in worrying about retiring, I'll only be 41, although I would love to retire at 40 LOL! In these turbulent times it's best to live for today and not to plan too far in advance, one my friends parents saved hard all their life putting away every single penny to give them a happy retirement as soon as the father got to retirement age his wife had a serious stroke, money wasn't any help to them, sad but true. You don't know what's around the corner and in answer to your question my friend I would rather wing it

Hubby and I are trying very hard to prepare for retirement. We both have a retirement through our employers. For each of us, we contribute the maximum and our respective colleges also contribute to our accounts. Besides that, we have a mutual fund that is never touched and allowed to accumualte its earnings. It is hard to prepare for our retirement right now, with two children heading to college! (one this August and one next August!)

I know college is just way too exspensive... and my daughter is still in college and has two more years to go. I can certainly understand what you mean......

I'm definitely going to plan my retirement. I'm going to start saving money as soon as I get a good job because we can no longer rely on our government because the so called "baby boomers" are taking all of our social security money and it'll be all used up by the time I can retire. Anyways, I want to travel all around the world, spoil my grandkids, and just relax!
