Does anyone know how to put weight on a diabetic dog?

I have a 9 year old mini pincher who is diabetic. He just became diabetic over the last year. I never knew what was wrong but all of a sudden he started to urineate alot. Then when i took him, they did a blood test and it showed that he was diabetic. I use to feed him real lamb, boiled chicken and rice. chicken gizzards or livers. Basically i cooked human food for him. Now he is on the science diet w/d. It was kinda hard at first because he is a smart dog. He has become so thin and when it comes to giving his shot, there is barely anything to grab onto. Does anyone know how to put weight on a diabetic dog?
