What's your favorite "classic penny candy?"

I keep seeing these ads for ginger barrel hard candies here on myLot, and I was wondering -- what's your favorite classic penny candy? For me it's those anise candies. You know, the hard bright pink candies that taste intensely of anise (the flavoring used in black licorice). What's yours?

Awe, no doubt, Swedish Fish! We had one small corner store that sold this stuff and when you found some change on the ground, that was where you went to spend it. I was also into the various Gummy Bears but never went for the sour or sugar coated ones.

oh man that brings back memories. i use to love to go and get those hard strawberry candies with the strawberry jam inside. then i loved to get the fishes and tooties rolls. my brother would make a big ball of tootsie rolls and then take the fishes and wrap it around the ball. we called them jelly delights.thanks for the good old memories

I always loved the anise candies too. Those and the tootsie rolls were always the best. Up until a few years ago we still had one store here where we could buy the penny candies. They went out of business a few years ago. I loved it though when we could walk in and see the jar of candies, just like it used to be.

Years ago, I worked with a guy in Virginia whose family was in upstate New York. He went up and visited about once a month, and always brought back a bunch of penny candy for the office candy jar. He and I were the only ones who ever ate the anise candy, so it lasted a long time. Sometimes I'd take a few when I went to visit my mom, cause she really likes em too.
