Do you spend a lot of time in the sun in the summer?

Even when I was a teenager I was never a big "lay in the sun" person. I would say it's because my first time out with friends at around the age of 13 I got a horrible case of sun stroke and suffered unbelievably. After that I would go to the local pond or beach but always made sure I wore a hat and didn't spend a lot of time there.
As I got older I read a lot about how the sun can ruin your skin and eventually cause all sorts of medical problems which I certainly didn't want. I also found out that it can do a job on your hair no matter how much you condition it and take care of it.
Now that I'm 60 I don't have a lot of the wrinkles on my face that a lot of people my age have. I also don't have freckles or spots that a lot of people get from the sun. I'm still very careful when I'm in the sun and don't make a habit of just laying in the sun. I get a great tan just from going outside to do whatever I have to do. Since I don't drive I do a lot of walking and in the summer of course I can't hide from the sun although I still wear a hat to protect my head.
Are you a sun worshiper? Do you spend a lot of time just laying in your lounge chair in the sun to get a tan? If you do aren't you concerned about what the suns rays can do even if you use the highest number sun screen?

I totally don't spend much time in the sun. I did more as a child, but that was my parents who would get me outside, now that I have a choice, I prefer inside.
I'm Irish and extremely pale. I get sun poisoning and blister very easily. As a matter of fact I was in Australia for only 2 hours and had a mild case of Sun Poisoning just from having my arm out the open window on the drive from the Airport to my friends house. I hadn't put on suntan lotion yet, I mean...I was just in a car!
I've never handled the sun very well and can still burn pretty badly when I wear suntan lotion. So I try my best to stay out of the sun as much as possible.

Oh, you poor thing! I feel so bad for you. I know how the Irish have that problem with the sun. My Dad was Irish and had the same problems. As much as he loved the sun he had to be very careful.

I have never been much for being in the sun either. When I was younger and would go to the lake with my parents to go fishing I would get alot of sun and it would be very painful and I dont like pain. And then it would peel and be really yucky. But now if I am in the sun too long I get sun poisoning on my arms which is very itchy and hurts. My mother was a big sun lover and she is paying dearly now, with all the sun spots and extra wrinkles her hair to isnt very nice it seems to be like straw. My sister is very into the sun too and you would think she would learn just by looking at our mother but I guess she will have to learn the hard way.

It's bad when people have to learn the hard way isn't it? If I saw all of that happening to my family members I would never go in the sun.

I could never understand why anyone would ever want to just lie in the sun is just seemed so senseless to me if i was at the pool, beach, river i was there to play/swim in the nice cool water .Sometimes i would over do it and become sun burned .But now i`m suffering from all those good times we had earlier this year i had surgery for cancer which has been caused by the sun and a few weeks ago i have discovered that the cancer has returned again i`m really paying the ultimate price for going out in the sun .
My advise to everyone would please cover up even though you do not think it is doing damage it`s causing a silent damage that can`t be seen for years.
I have very few wrinkles and i`m almost fifty but the effects of the redical surgery has made a big impact on my life now .These days i do not even go out to peg the clothes on the line .It all could of been prevented when i was young.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone paid attention to what you say? People don't believe the horrible things that the sun can do to us and don't know until it's too late. It definitely is a silent damage that we find out about too late. I'm so sorry you have had to go through all you have. God Bless you.

I try to stay out of the sun as much as possible. My dad has had several spots removed that turned out to be skin cancer. That taught me a lesson. Don't need to take chances in the sun and deal with heridity. I figure I spent enough time in the sun as a teenager foolishly so now it is time to act a little more responsibly.

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad but happy that you are smart enough to learn from what has happened to him. The sun is not always our friend.

Living in a tropical country it must be hard to stay out of it. Wearing the sunblock is a great safety hazard. Good going!

I am with you on the 'baking in the sun' idea'...not my cup of tea either. Also agree with why your skin is in better shape than a lot of sunworshippers I've seen.
We live in Manitoba and have 16 hours of sunshine during the summer...and very little in the winter. So I try to take advantage of it. Lately though my gardening is taking a back seat as I sit up in my office and Mylot by the hour.
I am of the same mind as you on getting an adequate amount of Vitamin D through the amount of time I do spend outside during the summer. I use sunscreen with I think about it...but always have a hat and sunglasses. My Mom developed eye problems from spending a lot of time in Southern Climates without wearing her 'shades.'
So I think we need to be cautious....but not too obssessed either way. Too little sun...too much sun...I like the way you doing it...balance and moderation leads to a happy, hopefully long unwrinkled life.LOL

I've also heard a lot of horror stories about sun and eye problems. That's another area I don't want to have problems in.

I am spending the summer in Arizona, and where I am staying there is a pool, a tennis court and a hot tub. I have plenty of excuses to be outside in the sunshine. There is also a cafe and ice cream store across the street with outdoor tables.

Arizona has to be one of THE hottest places I know of in the summer. They say you can fry an egg on the sidewalk and I believe it since I've been there a few times.

No I never was one to lay in the sun, not when there was so many trees to be climb, running to do, and just having a great time outside. We didn't have sun block when I was a kid and at 36, it shows. Sun spots and freckles, yuck. My girls are too young to think about laying out, but I do cover them with sun block religiously. Too much of a danger to soak up the sun, you know?

That's awesome that you take such good care of your kids in the summer sun. I'm sure when they are old enough you will explain the dangers and pitfalls to them.

Don't you wonder why people actually sizzle their skin like cooking a turkey? Makes me wonder about their mentality.

When I was younger, I would live at the pool each summer , I didn't purposely go to get a tan. I would get tan but I never got burned. But in my teens , I stopped swimming and I would spend most of the summer indoors. There days , I go out in the sun from tome to time, I do my usual errands and I go home. I get tan But I don't burn.

Yeah I spend a lot of time in the sun durring the summer when I work because I work in a grocery store and they usually make me go out and push the carts in and I usually stay out there for a few hours depending on how much carts there are because I like being outside in the sun especially when its a nice day .

Isn't it great to just get a tan and not burn? I always feel so bad when I see someone with peeling skin and I wonder how they could have been so stupid to let that happen.

I don't particularly lie out in the sun but I do sit and read under some shade. I always wear sunblock/sunscreen and often wear a cap or hat to keep the sun out. I do love the beach though but prefer to be under some shade. I tan really easily so 20 minutes in the sun playing volleyball or walking along the beach is long enough for me then its all shade.

Your a smart mommy! I also tan easily and those short walks or time in the sun is all I need. Even though I'm seldom in the sun purposely I still use sun block to protect myself.

No I am not a big lay in the sun person. I do like to get a little bit of a tan, but I am ok with just getting that when I am out in the sun for whatever reason. We have a pool and a boat, but I do not like to get burnt. So I take sunscreen.
But I am like you I don't want all the wrinkles etc. I worry because I have alot of moles. Sun is not good for a person.
I know some people who have sunbathed all their lives and they are so wrinkly and their skin is like a snakes skin. I don't want that for me.

Most of us are going to get wrinkles eventually but I can't see why anyone would want to rush it. Plus the fact that I'm sure they will be a lot worse if we have spent a lot of time in the sun.

I dont think I will do such thing by laying under the sun. I don like getting burnt. I dont have good skin and also if I get my skin burnt by the sun it will take me years to get my skin back to before.

Actually, I doubt burned skin can ever get back to it's original shape. I'm sure many people don't think about that. I'm happy that you do.

If I had the time to lay in the sun for a few hours a day, I would. I spend as much time out doors as I can, I even do my ironing outside if the weather is warm enough.
As I work from home, mostly attached to my laptop, I'm fortunate enough to be able to take my 'office' into my small garden. I can even get internet out there.
I'm always careful never to let my skin burn, but as I've been exposed to the sun quite a lot as a child, I grew up by the beach, I don't burn easily.
If I'm not able to spend much time outside, in the sunshine, depression can often set in. I find myself feeling 'down' and can sometimes get short tempered.
I like the glow of a healthy tan on my skin and if being in the sunshine puts a smile on my face, it can't be all bad. So long as I don't over do it and abuse the strength of the sun, everything in moderation and all that, I'm going to keep on enjoying the sunshine.

I definitely understand the depression that can come with lack of sunshine. It's good that you take precautions since you do spend a lot of time under the sun.

I go for a walk for an hour or so every day and I cannot avoid the sun. I am one of the lucky ones who have fair skin, and yet hardly get a burn. I have no patience to sit down in a lounge chair in the backyard getting a tan. I tried to do that when I was younger, but soon found out that I would rather get up and go, and since I tan gradually, I would have to be there all day to even get a slight shade. Besides it is easier to get a tan just walking around and working outdoors. I am in my sixties as well and I do not have wrinkly skin like some people do.

Like you even as a kid I was never too keen on just lying about in the sun at the beach or anything..uh, too ansty pantsy...LOL--and we must be similar in a way...since I never was an advocate of sun-worshiping I too don't have the bags and sags of people my age (I'm 51) and many people say I could pass for my thirties..I have seen the effects of too much sun though on people, and not exactly great looking as their skin now looks like an elephant's hide and tough as leather...LOL --also too much sun can cause cancers...so why risk it? I also wear a hat all the time too when I'm out

My daughter is 40 years old and has been one to lay in the sun since she was a kid. Not only that but using tanning booths which always made me crazy! At this point in our lives my skin looks 100% better than hers does and I feel so bad for her.

Your experience with your friends was interesting, ctrymuziklvr!
But I cannot lay in the sun because if I lay myself in the sun then I have to deserve some skin problems. So that in summer,I have to take care of my skin and avoid outside activities.

well i am the person who really hates the sun and would not even bother to sun bath on beach..i dont go on the beach while sun is shining so hot i just cant take the heat stroke, though i love beaches what i normally do is, go for a swim early in the morning while the sun is still sleeping, since the sun heats up so early during summer in here, usually 7 i am done with the beach and will just go back after the sunset..that time its cool already..i am so afraid on the sun because i can hardly take the heat..
when i go out, i see to it that its late afternoon or early in the morning where in the sun is not up anymore..if it has to be done on noon time i have to be with a big umbrella to cover me from heat..
its true that the sun can ruin our hair strands and makes it dry so bad..our skin will age so fast when exposed too much..it can cause us skin cancer because its rays are harmful to us..not like before, sun shine in the morning gives us vitamin D..but now i guess thats over because its not that cool to be under the sunny sun..
