why do dogs pee with one leg against the tree or wall?

they're worried it might fall and collapse on them.

I heard it was to get their urine the highest possible, so the scent wipes out any other dogs' scent below.

dogs lift their legs to aim at targets they want to use to mark territories as their own.And if your dog hasnt seen other dogs do that prolly he wont lift his leg either:)
