Do you ever just feel like you don't want to do anything?

That's unusual for me. I'm usually very goal oriented and wanting to be busy at something, even if it does have to be something sedentary because of my health.
But lately I've not wanted to do much of anything, even the things I usually enjoy doing. It frightens me because it is so much like depression and I don't want to become deeply depressed. But I think to be be diagnosed as depressed it has to be constant for two weeks or more. It hasn't been that long yet.
Yet I just don't know whether to really be concerned or if I am just going through some summer doldrums phase and shouldn't worry about it.
What do you think? Do you ever just feel like you don't want to do anything? Is it unhealthy to feel this "lazy"?

Yes it happens to me many times. Just don't feel like doing anything. suddenly a depressed and moodless feeling. This is not unhealthy, it is just that we are tired or we need something exciting. This feeling passes away soon...so lets not take it so seriously.

I guess I just get worried about the possibility of depression. It can be so debilitating. So at the first sign I get nervous about it.
Good advice - I need to lighten up!

Hi,youdontsay!
Last two weeks I had been preparing for my final exams of this semester but to be honest,I was not in the mood of reviewing my subjects.I feel exhausted but indeed I did nearly nothing except reviewing.I couldn't sleep at night but in daytime,if I had time to rest,I found it was hard to lay down on my bed.I didn't think I was lazy, because I absolutely did something but personally,I didn't want to do anything.Maybe my behavior in the last two weeks were odd even myself couldn't know the reason why I was so exhausted. But what I really wanted to do in the last two weeks were nothing.

Sounds like burnout. I'll bet some physical exercise would clear your mind and help you get centered.
Glad it is the end of the term so you can get a break from your studies.

I think that when we feel like that, sometimes it's our body's way of telling us that we need to slow down and relax for a bit. I know I usually end up pushing myself so hard and so long that I finally reach a point that my body just goes into "zombie mode" for a few days. That's when I know I need to just sit back and rest for a while and then I'm ready to face the world again. Hopefully that is all you are going through and it's nothing more serious than that.

I must be improving. It isn't a constant feeling now. There are periods each day now where I want to do things. Of course, I'm not always able to do them or to do anything for any length of time. But the feeling of wanting to do things even when I am unable seems like an improvement.
Thanks.

I think if you feel like having a lazy day once in a while (I had one on Saturday), then thats fine and perfectly normal. If it lasts several days or a week, then I would start to think you have some mild depression. If you are able to get out and get a change of scene, even if it out to a coffee shop or something, I would suggest doing it. It might help head off the depression. I know it helps me a lot to get out of the house. Take Care.

You are right. I need to get out and do something on my own. Seems like I have very little time to myself. And that IS in my control.
O.K. Tonight I will go out somewhere on my own.
Thanks.

I went out to a nearby park and sat on a bench watching the people. It was amazing how many different cultures were represented by folks just walking through the rose gardens. I saw people from the middle east, the far-east, Indonesia, and Mexico. And I was only there for half an hour.
I don't feel much different than before I went out, but at least I got myself out of the house for a while.
Tomorrow will be better.

There are times where I don't want to do anything. The feeling doesn't last too long and it can't since I have a 7 month old. I am always on the go! I don't think it is unhealthy to feel that way unless it is all the time. It's probably just your body telling you that you need some rest!

You may be right. With Chronic Fatigue it is hard to tell whether rest will help or not.
Thanks.

Hello my friend,
Sorry to hear you're going through the 'blahs.' Hope the blue-blahs lift soon...those doldrum moods aren't fun.
It is hard to make a comment without knowing what else has been going on with you lately. I am a life coach and work with people in assessing their lifestyle and whether their 'wheel of life' has become unbalanced in some way or other.
Some of the first things I ask myself and others when the blahs hit are a series of questions. What you choose to do with them is up to you. Anyway...here goes:
Has anything changed in your normal routines...food/ beverages...too little/too much? Any foods you don't normally eat? Family gatherings where there was feasting? All these things can change the inner balance of the body.
Any emotional upsets in the last while?
Sleep patterns disrupted by (like me) too many late nights Mylotting?
Someone close not doing well...are you feeling worried or concerned?
Feeling lonely, missing something, bored, unfullfilled, need a break, working too hard?
Wishing or wanting something or someone...but it or they are not available?
Needing to get out...fresh air exercise lacking?
Perhaps feelings need to be journalled?
Just a few ideas that might help you to access that immense well-spring of inner knowing you have...because I've consistently seen in during your posts on my site.
You have everything you need to know about what is going on inside where that wise woman lives.
Wishing you bright light to help illuminate your shadows.

Thank you. I think the root of all this is the ongoing pain that is worse than usual and I'm discouraged about it. I have an appointment tomorrow for osteopathic maniputlation, hoping it will relieve the severe pain.
The pain disrupts everything. There is definitely something wrong in my sacro area. This is not fibro pain. But it does stimulate the fibro pain cycle and the fatigue. So getting rid of this pain will do a world of good.
Think positive and healing thoughts for me.

Greetings again,
Just logged on and saw your post on the millionaire discussion...you got my best vote on that one today. I will add more to that later..right now I'm doing responss to yesterday's on friends sites.
I am sorry to hear about your physical discomforts...it is not surprising that you are feeling discouraged...trying to manage pain can be very draining.
You are in my thoughts and prayers and will send you an e-mail about some things that assisted me with fibro and ostero-arthritis by e-mail.
Let me know how you made out with your adjustment. You are an on-line gal-pal...and I care.
Warmest regards

there are times when i feel so lazy. i know that there are lots of things i need to do but i just don't feel like doing anything at all. but this doesn't happen all the time for me. i love to move a lot. i wanna finish chores and do everything that should be done. but there are days when i feel like just staying in bed or watching movies and eating a lot. feels like i donät wanna move and do anything. and i don't find anything wrong about our lazy days. i think it's just natural for us to go through. we aren't robots and our bodies get tired, too after sometime. so, it's better to have those lazy days and have ourselves recharged... anne

I guess it is just that it is happening so much of the time that it worries me. I have these strong messages from my childhood that being lazy is bad.
But I'm giving myself a break. Just because I want to be lazy now doesn't mean I will be lazy forever. My body says, "Hey, take care of me!" I've got to stop ignoring it.
Thanks.

I go through the same thing quite often, although mine is sometimes caused by depression, I don't think that the depression is always the cause. If yours is not lasting for more than a couple of days, it could be caused by pain, or fatigue. Make sure that you are getting enough rest, and take your vitamins. I hope that you are feeling better soon.

Thanks. I think I will feel better when the pain is more manageable.
And I can't survive without the vitamins and rest!

Yes. Even I have felt that many times. But I do feel that feeling that way means to be lazy. I do take it as a break for me from my regular activities and relax myself. Almost every month, atleast once, I do relax myself, doing nothing and sitting for more than an hour.

Hello youdontsay,
I always feel like this. I am not sure if you can say that to feel like not wanting to do anything equals to being lazy. Sometimes, I just don't have the mood to do anything. If it happens and I really don't feel like doing anything, I will just go and take a nap. But, I will be so disappointed when I wake up from my nap. I always think why I chose to take a nap rather than doing something else. I feel like I am wasting my precious time and well, I will be moody after that!
Do you think we can call this a depression? But I don't think I feel depressed. I just don't understand it sometimes...
Guess you don't have to worry too much. Many people out there share the same feeling like you and that's including myself *smile*

Actually its normal if you feel that sometimes. I always feel that way too. People can get bored sometimes the same activities all the time. Why dont you go for some massage or body treatment, spoil yourself for sometimes. I think you will get fresh again. Good luck...!!!

Thanks. Maybe I need to declare a BE GOOD TO MYSELF WEEK. I do that once in a while. It means I must do at least one thing a day that is just for me and feels good.
Good reminder. Thanks.

There are times for me thinking the same too. I don't know if this is not job is not challenging anymore or I got bored. Especially Monday's morning when I have to get up to work, I feel like i am going to call out sick, but I think it is healthy though to get yourself "adjust" a little bit and know if you are doing the "right" thing for yourself!

When I was working I'd look forward to Monday morning! I loved my work. But the last few years of that job I began to hate the job because they changed my work to more of what I didn't like. After that I, too, dreaded Monday's and didn't want to go in to work.
If that is happening to you, do something to add challenge to your work or change the way you do it. Change something to make it more attractive to you.
If you can't do that, then you might start looking for another job!
