Are you self-employed? How do you handle the ups & downs in your business?

I'm a self-employed professional. A hypnotherapist specifically, with an office in my home. I've been offering my services this way for several years now. I've been self-employed most of my adult life, at one time I owned a retail store & I've done various work-from-home jobs. When I add up all the pros & cons for me & my family; being self-employed just works best for me. My only complaint is that I've just never learned to cope well with the occasional unexpected lulls in business. With the service I offer, I can expect to see clients a couple times but not usually more than that. If I were a hairdresser for example, I'd see the same clients as often as their hair grew. With this I see someone until they've mastered the change they wish to make in their life & then that's the last I'll see of them. I know my income is flexible, and that I should pay more attention to my savings when it is busy; but I seldom do. Just wondering how many Mylotters work from home? If so, what do you do? And how do you budget or prepare for slower times in your business?

My husband is self-employed, and yes you are right - it's filled with ups and downs. We tend to spend all his money quickly hen he makes it, and we get used to that, and then we complain when a week later he hasn't made any... Luckily for us, I have a "normal" job with health care and a steady paycheck, which enables us to remain solvent during the "downs."

I am not self-employed. I work as a teacher. I have the idea to be self-employed some day after I get a taxicab of my own. I will rent it to another one who will drive in the evening till morning and will charge the rent.

That's a great idea. Wonder if I could find someone interested in renting my office when I don't need it...

well, just like you at present i chose to be self-employed rather than to work in a company and have a lousy and a nagger boss.....i have spent almost 20 years of employment in the different various fields of work, office field, clerical,etc...it was just in the last few jobs that i have been into that i realized that doing business would be more good and much more challenging...i have been into sales for almost 5 years and i realized that into sales you can dictate your income, that it the time i decided to venture into business...in this kind of business self-employed type, you are the one who can say if you are successful or not it all depends on how you handle your business...ups and downs in this kind of field is part and parcel of the business...you should not depend on 1 type of business it depends on the demand...like me i would sell or try to give something to them depending on the demand and the type of climate change....i mean why would you sell a raincoat to an individual when it is a sunny day?i mean in this business it all depends on the demand of the individual we are serving or catering....don't lose hope, in every downs in life, there is always a light in the end of the tunnel...
