People Who Drop Stray Cats at Barns

frustrate me to no end! I've trapped over 14 stray cats since I moved into my house, which is across from a barn. People see the barn and think that the farmer would just love their pregnant cat. Well, he wouldn't. He has his own barn cats and the abandoned cats come across the street and live in the woods and under the sheds here. They get attacked by foxes, nasty tom cats I haven't been able to trap and hoodlums who hike through the woods with paint ball guns. They get covered in deer ticks and get Lyme's disease before I can trap them and take them to the local no kill shelter. They attack my neighbor's cat, who hangs out on her patio during the day, and run up her vet bill. Please, if you have a cat you don't want any more, do not think you are doing it a favor by dropping it off at a farm. It has a much better chance of living at a no kill shelter. Thanks for letting me rant. I just saw another little cat with a big belly hiding in the hedge and checked around. It doesn't belong to anyone, so hopefully we can catch it before it has kittens to catch, too.

I'm glad you vented. People make me sick. They should have brains, and emotions, but it seems when it comees to animals they just don't care. I don't want to start, so I will close now.

Margie Anne, I worked for a vet for awhile and dropping unwanted cats at a barn pales in comparison to the things some people do to their pets.

Thanks for the rant. I feel the same way. I see people all of the time trying to give away kittens. If you don't want kittens fix your cat or keep it inside. I live on a farm but if a stray cats comes around my neighbors house he shoots it. He does it with dogs as well. I don't agree with it but I can't stop him. He knows how I feel. I live near a campground & a marsh. Both are within 5 miles. College kids will dump their pets at one of them because they are moving on & don't want them anymore. I get so mad when I see them running around.

And fixing female cats is so much cheaper than it used to be, what with spay certificates and all. I used to see the college problem when I lived next to University of Delaware. The kids would leave for summer break or graduation and kittens and puppies were everywhere. Not all college kids are irresponsible, though. Many of them took better care of their pets than adults I know and routinely went to the vet, etc.

Very great point. If your not part of the solution then your part of the problem. Every animal needs to be spayed and neutered to help prevent unwanted animals and every needs to be taught respect towards animals. Dumping them off along side the road at a barn is not respectful to any animal....and its adding to the problems not helping to solve the larger problems...
