i am so disappointed today..

i woke up 6:00 in the morning just to get ready for today i am again on track of finding job..my first destination was the call center company..i know how hard this job is..stressing and could be a lot of pressure.. i came first in the company waited for hours till the receptionist came in and started to ask for my resume..i handed her my resume and all of a sudden she just said, she was sorry because they are just hiring for 4 year grads or at least 3rd year college.. i was so disappointed..after waiting for so long hours that is all i could get..they just get to get so high qualifications with degree even without looking at your potentials.. i saw a woman next to me..she was done with interview and all stuff just last week and she just returned to be interviewed again because they said she was qualified but...but..she has to have knowledge to microsoft word and microsoft excel..on which i specified on my resume that i have knowledge in microsoft word, excel, power point presentaion.publisher..ugh!..isn't those a potential qualification too dont you think? why hire someone who graduated when she dont even knew the mechanisms and reject someone who knew more on what they are expecting them to learn.. i dont get why is it so necessary to graduate a degree just to qualify and for your potentials to be left behind..

I have a real issue with this myself. Quick answer: What a degree shows is that you are someone that can get something accomplished (you stayed in school and finished SOMETHING). Discussion: It is funny 'cause when I am on the job hunt I don't have people asking me what KIND of degree I have just whether I have one or not. If I were an employer I would much rather have someone with real-world experience over a piece of paper anyday. How do you accomplish this? This is my steps to getting a job. #1. Don't bother whether someone is 'hiring' or not. Get as many resume's out there as possible and if you have the time fill out as many applications as possible. Make a note of who you went to and what you applied for (very important. #2. Wait a couple days (or keep on the hunt!) #3. In a couple days CALL THEM and ask to speak with the manager. When you get the manager (it may take a couple calls) tell him/her your name and then let them know you left your resume/applied there and would like to setup an interview. #4. Be persistant. We're not hiring right now is not an excuse to hang up the phone... it is an opportunity to show what kind of go-getter you are. Something like "I understand you are not hiring right now but I am sure as with many companies you have a high turnover rate and I would like to not miss an opportunity at a wonderful position with a great company because I showed up on the wrong day. I am just asking for a couple minutes of your time. Would Tuesday or Friday be better for you?" Always use Friday (they will never pick Friday as a day for an interview. #5. Some will/some won't/so what/NEXT... you are not going to get in the door of every company but making an effort that surpasses those of other applicants will land you the job and not them. #6. Interview. Girls... no cleavage! Here in Florida (southern US for those outside the US) it is very relaxed and you can get away with going to an interview 'business casual'... in fact it is quite expected. When I lived up north if you were not completely clean shaven (for a guy), in a business suit and dressed to the nines, you had three strikes against you.... #7. Persistance again... after that interview wait a couple days for them to call you back. If they do not then call them back. "This is (name) and I felt our interview went very well" wait for response (usually positive). "When would be the best time for me to start?" Yeap... ask for the job. You'll usually get the boiler-plate "We have other applicants..." BS but insist you are the one for the job while telling them you understand they have to do their job... ask them when they will be done with the process (Tuesday they say) and call them the DAY BEFORE. Be ready for rejection. You are going to get a lot more no's than yesses but that job is out there for you... you just have to go out there and take it.

well this are all a good tip..thank you for this i really appreciate it.. whats getting me real disappointed was, i already got into the same job years back and all they had to do was scan my resume and i was on for an exam and interview all done for the day..but i wasnt expecting it will happen somehow because a friend of mine works in there and says it was good enough that i had some experience already for the job because they want those more rather than the grads who doesnt have one..its quite easy for the first one..but now, its just so upsetting to be rejected without even scanning my resume's work field..once they just seen me undergrad and thats it..i am not qualified anymore..i dont think its not fair but anyway..i know there are lots of companies who would want me in..;)

Like you, I didn't graduate from college too. But I am skilled. I was annoyed when some jobs I applied for turned me down for the same reason, but I do understand that they require a degree for those jobs. If you want I can actually help you get a job in a call center, my former employer don't require a degree, just good english communication skills.

the reason why i didnt finish college is not because i wasnt interested on my studies or nothings to do with being lazy during the old days..i do hope i finished as i love studying so much i was just unfortunate for lacking for finance by the time i was in college..

I am sorry to hear about your experience when you applied for a work today. Didn't they inform you, or told you that they are only looking for college graduates when you were applying beforehand? There must be some mistake why you waited only to be rejected because of your education background. College graduates do have the most advantages when it comes to applying for jobs, its a sad reality, Some call center tasks and clients are particular about this too especially if it is financial accounts, like what we have in our call center. I am sure that you will be able to find your job soon, you might want to check the qualifications first before you go and wait around in a company so as not to waste your time.

Hi angel of charm, i see you had a rough day. Waiting for something to happen but turning out to be nothing, such a bad day..Well, there are certain advantages for some college graduates who usually apply for a job as againts the undergrads and it may seem discriminating, but having a college degree has some good perks. Maybe i could suggest that since your always on the net, try to apply online. And while online, try to check out the companies that your interested in. You said you know various WINDOWS APPLICATION, then send your resume thru their email. In that way, if your qualified they'd definitely give you a call and schedule you for an interview. Goodluck and happy job hunting :)

to tell you the truth, its only in the Philippines that they discriminate undergrads..on some country even undergrads had made their way on top also because of the company for hiring them..knowing the how difficult it is to finish in this country beacuse the financial for the school is so dang high..they should be aware that they must hire some people who had enough potentials before they reject them..there are some who just graduates for diploma but doesnt have any potentials to share to make the company in progress..damn Philippines..

The only way is try try and try till you succeed. Not all the companies ask for graduates. There are many which even ask for people wo have completed school too. You need to make a proper research to find which companies hire you. Moreover, its not only the degree that counts, your knowledge and skills shine brighter than anything.

what a day you have here angel_of_charm, well i dont think that you enter the right company ! well just think of the positive side maybe its not really meant for you, try other call center maybe they have a slot just for you!! i appreciate your effort to come early for your job interview keep it up..as far as i know call center doesnt require a 4 year grad for as long as your willing to work and willing to learn you are qulified to be an agent... good luck...

It is very disappointing the way companies hire people and leave others behind. I do not understand how companies can tell someone that they are overqualified. I would rather someone that is qualified for the job than someone who is not or who does not know anything about that particular job. I know some companies want to give college graduates a chance at starting a career but they should give people with high degrees and previous work experience an opportunity as well.

very true, i think it would be a great advantage for them to hire someone who has the potential to make their company worthwhile rather than hiring someone who needs a lot of training to fit the job..sure its their loss anyway so i wont be grieving for this.

Call center jobs totally suck and have no future. You just need to specialize in a certain field with certain products. Working for a call center is only going to get you looking for a new job 6 months down the road. Don't be flustered. Think of your favorite thing to do and then find out some way to get paid working with that thing. That's the only way to be happy.

Morning!Wow,you're up early.I understand how hard it is to get a job!I graduated with a Biomedicine degree and still I was jobless for 4 months before Glaxo Smith Kline called me for an interview.Don't worry angel of charm,I'm sure you'll get a call from a company better than a Call Centre and they'll be sorry!Have you tried online jobservices? You should try your luck with that. And with your qualifications,I'm sure you'll secure a job in no time.Best of luck!

You the irony is that I own my own business and I would love to hire someone to call the 10000000 leads I have as I am too sick these days to do it myself. The only thing is it would not be a regular salary but commission based. If you have any interest feel free to email me, and no this is no scam.

Don't be, I am sure there are lots of call centers out there that would accept non graduates. If you really have the potential why worry. I was an applicant interviewer before and we do look for potentials, but qualifications are pre requisites. It's a matter of looking for companies that would match with your qualifications, so keep on trying theres always a better call center job there for you.

That is a bummer when that happens, but another door always open sooner then you think, I have been in a similar position but in a different aspect to yours, but it made me lose self-esteem in myself where I did'nt want to go and find employment again even tho I knew I had the right personality and attitude, but to history never pays. I hope you dont give up in searching for a job cos theres always a better one out there and with your qualifications you will be able to use your potentiials to the fullest... Go for goals, and never give up....

Hello angel!(",) Sorry to hear about your story. Well, I guess, you have to try once again. Just keep on going and pursuing your job hunting because for sure there is one for you out there.(",) Don't lose hope. Not being able to finish college should not be a hindrance for you to finding a job. Many call center accept undergraduate given that they are skillful and undergone the training. You'll find one job that suits you. Keep the faith!(",)

Nice topic! I just finished making my resume. I just want to apply to a call center. Like you, I don't have any college degree but I am skilled. I took a short term course which is related to computer operations. I knew a lot about word processing, making spreadsheets and presentations. I have an idea and I've applied it to my resume. Here it is: On my resume, I wrote first the "Work Experience" followed by the "Skills and Interests" then, the "Education". I don't think this will work and I don't think if there is proper format/order of making resumes. ~mar
