Breastfeeding moms... higher needs between 3 and 6 months?

I have two friends who told me they lost all their baby weight and then some between 3 and 6 months. They both said they felt they couldn't keep up with the babies demand for milk and that they felt the baby was leeching their nutrients. One friend even said her gums were receding! A lactation nurse told me it is very common for women to start supplementing at this time as well. What were your experiences with this? My baby is almost three months old, so I'm curious about meeting his needs as well as keeping myself healthy.

I nursed my daughter until she was about 6 months. I did start to supplement around 4 months. Not because of my body falling apart, for lack of a better term, but because I wanted my body back. It sounds like your friend migt not be eating enough or taking a vitamin supplement. I lost about 75% of my baby weight within the 2 weeks after hving my daughter. It was crazy. With my son, my first, it took months to drop the weight but we had trouble nursing and I mainly pumped for about 6 weeks, then going back to wory it was too hard to keep up with. My daughter was a pro nurser and I am glad Idid it as long as I did. I have a couple friends who did it until their babies were a year or more. I am glad they were able to do it that long but it just wasn't for me. Do what you are comfortable with. If you can keep it up with no problems then go for it! You won't ever regret having that time together but once you stop it is really hard to start back up again.

I am not a mother yet but most of the lactating mothers I know really take in supplements for their own sake. Its really advisable because there is someone who is getting these nutrients from you.
