How sunsmart are you?

Do you wear sunscreen everytime you go outside? What about on cloudy days? Do you wear a hat when you're outside? If i'm going out for a walk or to mow the lawn etc I'll wear sunscreen all over, even though I have olive skin. I'm cautious not only because of sun safety (I live in the skin cancer capital of the world :/ ) but also because sun damage is most responible for aging, wrinkly skin (yes I'm a bit vain). So do you take care when you're in the sun?

Hello fellow aussie .Yep it sure is the skin cancer capital and i`m one of the suns victims after having surgery to remove cancer and now finding that it`s back and spread is not a good thing.I do wear sunscreen daily but not a hat i do not go out in the sun that much anymore. As a child we didn`t have sunscreen nor were we encouraged to wear hats but we did play outside all day long and when we went swimming we were continually sunburnt .Today i`m paying the price one thing i`m glad for is that i never spent any time just lying our in the sun for the want of a lovely tan it was just not me . I have made sure my children didn`t suffer the same results as me and sunscreen has played a daily part of their routine .But then there are no guarentees in this life that they won`t surcum to the same fate as me .

Hello to another Aussie, I see we are hot on this discussion. I am sorry that you have suffered skin cancer. Which type of cancer is it? When I was a child, we didn't wear hots, or hardly any block out either. Not good.

Hello jenny i was diagnosed with a BCC earlier this year and had extensive surgery but now less than three months later it`s back again this time spreading even furthur .The surgeon at the time did say it may return some time later as it was a really bad one to have.I just didn`t expect it back so soon though .Not sure if i even want to go through the surgery thing again as i still haven`t recovered fully from the last round.

I've wore sunscreen while tanning in the sun. To be honest, I don't think about it often enough though. Nor do I wear it as often as I should. I know, just go ahead and shoot me!

Last year I did wear sunscreen on my face everyday. Then it ran out. I did buy one but now I'm a bit lazy to put it on. I guess I have to start doing that all over again. My face is darker than the rest of my body and it really bothers me. And yeah, even if it's a cloudy day, the UV rays of the sun can penetrate the clouds so it's the same thing, just less hot.

Hi,I never used to be careful at all when I was out in the sun. Then one day I was playing golf on a brutally hot day and did not wear a hat or sunscreen. I ended up getting sunstroke and my lips got so burnt they got all infected and full of scabs. I actually have a permanent mark on my lips from that day.:( Now...I always cover up. Lesson learned!cheers,

I try to wear sunscreen most of the time. I've always been told to wear sunscreen on cloudy days because the harmful UV rays come through the clouds or something like that. My skin is the type that burns before it tans so I really need to be wearing sunscreen in the summer.

I try to wear sunscreen whenever I'm going to be in the sun for more than a few minutes. My skin is extremely fair and my genetic predisposition makes me a prime candidate for skin cancer. I've had it removed from my face twice so far. Unfortunately, the last time the doctor informed me I was going to continue to develop new sites whether I ever went out in the sun again or not. A lot of it is plain genetics. I wear at least a 45 sunblock and try to reapply it frequently. If I'm out for a few hours, that means I also need to find a way to remove layers in between applications or it starts to feel like I've varnished myself - very unpleasant. I do burn extremely fast, I've received a sunburn at the end of December on a 10 minute walk - I live in Wisconsin! There isn't much sun at the end of December here and it's extremely weak.

We are meant to be very sunsmart in Australia. Many people are. Our skin cancer rates are the highest in the world. This is because not only are our days in summer, one of the longest in the world, but the actual length of day, is also very long. Plus, we are also surrounded by either the sea or the desert, which reflects the sun. One needs to use a 30+ blockout, plus wear a hat with wide brim. Some people also need to wear long sleeve shirts even in summer.

Nope. I don't care for sunscreen..and my skin never burns in the sun anyway..if my ancesters (I'm talking about my native american ones), didn't need sunscreen and never got skin cancer because of the sun then I won't bother withsun screen. *shrugs* No one in my family's gotten it, PLUS we tend to eat a better diet than most folks we know. Lots of fruits..and not as much sugar. If the sun feels to hot I go in the shade, or get a hat. But otherwise I don't think twice before going outside. I don't particularly care if it gives me wrinkles lol. If I'm old, I ight as well look it. And people in my family tend to age well (lol), anyway. But that's me..I don't tend to worry about myself all that much. And since I'm healthier than many of my friends noting tends to prompt me to worry that much. Call me carefree, or naive..or whatever. But..*shrugs*

Sun damage causes 90% of the signs of aging in your skin!! I wear sun screen every day - winter, summer, rain or shine. I always wear sunscreen! There's no reason not to. I wear hats when I work outdoors, and I never tan on purpose - fake or laying out in the sun. I also make sure my sunglasses have UV protection in them to protect my eyes! You only have one skin, and it's the largest organ in yor body... I plan on taking care of it. Arbonne International has great sunscreen products that are all natural, botanical and not stinky and greasy. If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM...

I don't use sunscreen daily, even though I probably should. If I'm going out of the house for a while, I will use sunscreen on my face, shoulders, and any of my tattoos that will be visible. I rarely stay outside for very long, though, because I don't like getting tan at all. I'm very pale naturally, and I'd rather stay that way.

I used to be a sunworshipper but after hearing all that is known now about the damages the sun can do to your skin, I am much more cautious. I don't go tanning and yes do wear sunblock.

Everyone aught to wear sunscreen even during cloudy day. Because suns rays can penetrate through the cloud. Wearing sunscreen is a must especially if you have faire skin.

I rarely wear sunscreen. I just never feel I need to. I never really get sunburned (even though I'm pretty pale), and I don't mind the pain anyway. Sometimes I regret like the time I went to a waterpark all day long and didn't wear sunscreen. I was peeling for the next two weeks. Sometimes I try to wear it but I am too lazy to apply the sunscreen.

I hardly ever burn. I heard that sunscreen is bad for you. See this article: http://www.therealessentials.com/sunblock.html which also says that the diet we eat may increase our chances of skin cancer. I used to eat a lot of fish and make sure I get a lot of Omega-3 in my diet. My mother-in-law who was born and raised in the Prairies got the usual white type bread, sausage, potato soup, diet and got skin cancer. I used to use a sun tan lotion, but I found that it did no go, because I just stayed pale. What I did was to gradually increase my exposure, and made sure I did not lay in the sun. I go for walks, I get a lot of movement. I do wear sun glasses and I make sure there is a lot of shade. I have fair skin, but for some reason (I am part German, part English, part Welsh, and part Austrian) I seem to have inherited the skin that gradually tans and when it burns, the burn changes to a tan. I am 64 years of age.

Well I just answered a similar type question to someone else the other day. I am a pale irish girl and therefor I not only burn easily, but I get sun poisoning too. So I'm very sun smart. I wear spf on my face year round and I definitely where sun screen if I am out in the sun for long. I'm very sun smart.
