Mahatma Gandhi once said, "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." Taken on the context of the present day Christians, do you agree with Gandhi's observation? Why?

gandhiji - mahatma gandhi-the father of the nation of India
I really don’t know in what context Gandhiji said these words but I think he was reacting to many things, which are now no longer there. Firstly he might be referring to racism as faced by him in South Africa and since racism was practices predominantly by white Christians, he might have made this comment. But racism is no longer such a huge presence neither is it politically correct to be a racist. Secondly, he might be referring to the view held by westerners (in his days) of our Hindu religion as pagan. But Hinduism, as we know it today, has been restored to its former glory, not by some insignificant contributions by white westerners into the depth and contribution of this ancient religion. Thirdly, during the Mahatma’s days, there was a conscious and constant wave of conversion and missionaries came to India by the hordes to convert natives, in the name of education, enlightenment and emancipation. Fourthly, there was, of course the question of exploiting and colonizing the non-Christian world (politically and economically) by the Christian world. However, the situation is much changed now. So there is really no point in judging present-day Christians by what the Mahatma said.

Gandhi's observation is partly true. There are Christians who just puts up a face but deep within they were not transformed. They do not talk the talk and walk the walk. What do i mean by that is that there are Christians who spoke about religious things convincingly yet there actions are far different from what they claimed to be.Thus, negative perceptions to Christians are generalize. I still believe that there are Christians out there who speak and act like Christ.Though they are not perfect because they can still commit mistakes but in Gods sight if they have Christ in their hearts and they confess their sins everytime they made a mistake.God will continue to forgive and accept them.

I think the majority of Christians are fine. Unfortunately, it's the fundies among us that have the loudest voice and give Christ a bad name. Many non Christians do feel this way and with good reason. They don't see the rest of us.

I'm Christian and very much afraid that this applies to self-styled Christians of any age. Just read Paul, James and John and the not very gentle reprove they give to part of the contemporary communities they talk to. Christian comes from following Christ. Want to know whether we're Christian? Let's revise our discipleship. Do we practice Jesus' ethics? Do we take the cross to follow him? Do we have compassion and care for the lost, the poor, the sick? What about our economics? Do we share our income with less fortunate fellowmen and nations, or do we rejoice in our wealth, misinterpreting God's purpose when he allowed us to have it. What about our position regarding war -very neuralgic right now- or capital punishment? Do we just oppose abortion or labor to offer some alternative to desperate wome? Do we spend a significant amount in foreign missions or do we just declare that muslims are enemies of Christianity (as did occurr in some posts I read)? When was the last time we answered a strike on the right cheek by showing the agressor our left cheek? Only God knows who are the Christians among us, but be sure, they must somehow reflect Christ's love and mercy.

There are some Christians who put a dark cloud over that title and are questionable in there actions but we must remember that Christians are perfect only forgiven. Even Mahatma Gandhi wasn't perfect

hi. I will have to admit that many Christians are not like the Messiah they claim they are following. I cannot judge both of Gandhi or the Christians though. but small mistakes sometimes are so noticable by the others and most will point out the mistakes rather than the correct things. so ... perhaps Mahatma Gandhi had ever been through a very critical situation with these cases and he pointed out the most noticable thing. but at least, he didn't say something against our Christ, right? so I don't mind. we are the Christians are not perfect, and many of us have done things so remarkable that non-Christian will land their criticizm upon the whole community. so, never mind about his statement. half of his statement is true anyway. the important thing is ... how are we, in the sight of our Messiah Himself? will He say similar statement with Gandhi about us being so unlike our Messiah? that's the point I need to know about myself.
