Birthday cakes--do you make them or buy them?

Grocery stores offer pre-made cakes, often with cute cartoon characters or other nice decorations, but they are so expensive! Our grandchildren always want a particular cake but with the last birthday I talked them into letting me bake the cake. Do you give in an buy the overpriced cakes or make birthday cakes for your family?

My mom had cake pans in all sort of cartoon characters that she would make for her grandchildren. They really got a kick out of them.

yea, he really liked it, Me, I couldnt do it, I am not that great at decorating with icing. and it costs about the same amount to buy the pan and the decorations as it does to just get them to make it for you, in fact with the spongebob cake I found it cheaper through them. I wil continue to use them throughout the years, they are great at what they do. Kids do really love those shaped cakes =)

I don't think I have ever bought a cake, it is just cheaper to make them and I like baking anyway. My daughters will buy cakes. One daughter does not cook much at all anyway. The other is an excellent cook but her kids want the ones with the cartoon characters on them. Sometimes I talk them into letting me make the cake.

We buy them probably because most people including my wife had not learnt baking. Our food habits are different and bread making, biscuit making and cake making is foreign to us.

Hi jillbeth! I agree with you that birthday cakes are very expensive especially the made to order ones. If I just listened to my mom before that I have to learn how to bake cakes maybe I would be saving a lot these days. So, I guess I am stuck into buying birthdays cakes for my loved ones and friends. Take care and have a nice day!

It's not hard to make a cake. I cheat and usually use box mixes! But I can do a little decorating, so for birthdays I dress them up a little bit myself.

Well, I normally would buy it since I am not knowing how to make a cake. I hope I could learn how to make the Cake by myself in near future so that I could make a special one for my family as well. WBR,Andy

It is more rewarding (for me at least) to make things for my family instead of buying them. I guess because you can put in a measure of love!

Yes, I think it is more fun to make things for my family and friends that to buy them.

I used to buy the store made cakes. But now I hardly ever do. My boyfriend loves to bake. For my daughter-in-laws baby shower he made one cake in the shape of a baby carriage and the other one he made to look like toy blocks but they spelled baby. They turned out beautiful. I would much rather have a cake that was made at home.

My mother loved to bake and decorate cakes, and did a lot of different one for friends. I think her most popular cake was the "bachelor party" cake. She would cut a sheet cake into the shape of a woman's torso and decorate it with a frosting bikini. She used the round coconut "snowball" cakes for the chest, and baked a cherry into the cake you-know-where!

Hello jillbeth, I normally buy the cake. It is not that expensive here, in my country. I am pretty busy with job and house chores that I find it hard to find time to do it. I will resort to the easiest choice that I have: go to the bakery and let them know what kind of birthday cake I want. I have a niece who loves to bake and sometimes, I asked her to bake it for me. Definitely this is the cheaper way. *smile*

Yes, the easiest and cheapest way is to have a friend do it for you! My mother loved to bake and decorate cakes. She made the wedding cakes for me and my sister, and her younger brother.

I used to buy birthday cakes for my family. But now I dont have to buy anymore. I can eat cakes when I want. You must be questioning why could I do that? Becoz my hubby own a bakery himself, so I can just tell my employee to make wht kind an shape exactly like I want without paying any.....

I used to but birthday cakes when the kids were little and everyone had something wrong with it. The name was spelled wrong or it wasn't done in the middle or something like that. So I decided to take cake decorating myself and make the cakes. Now I have people calling me to make the cakes instead of the stores and bakeries. I especially enjoy the character cakes like Shrek and Spiderman. It is great because you earn extra money too

I can do a little cake decorating myself, Mom taught me, and when people know you can do it, you can get lots of requests! She worked full-time but made some extra spending money by taking orders.

Whenever we have occassions we usually buy our birthday cakes on a popular bakeshop here. We have nobody in our family who knows how to make one and most often we are busy at work so we just pre-order in advance and have it made for us just to pick it up. :-)

It is more convenient to buy cakes, and they are usually decorated quite nicely. But I enjoy doing my own. I can do a little cake decorating, nothing fancy, but I can make roses and borders!

Because I save money, and because the home-made is the best (making things with your own material, chose by you)I will make my own cake.

Yes, home made is the best! In fact, all this cake talk got me hungry for cake again so I am eating some of the left over cake from my granddaughter's birthday last Sunday (the one I made!)

None of my family members are bakers. So if we need a cake, we would order them from the confectionery. Afterall, we do not eat cakes often. The number of cakes we eat per year is less than 10. lol.

Well since two of my three kids are still very young, I make all thier cakes. They may not be perfect like the store bought cakes. But they come from the heart and are much cheaper. I think I spend less than $5.00 to make each of thier cakes every year. I do know that a day will come when my kids won't want me to make them a cake any more yet alone want one period. So I am going to enjoy making them thier cakes while I can.

Neither me nor my wife know how to make a cake and so we usually buy the cake outside for our birthdays. But my mothers know perfectly on how to make different cakes, so she used to prepare the cake at home itself, when I was a kid and celebrated my birthday with my Parents. The cake she used to make, was the most favorite for me, even better than the cake made in the shops out there.
