I am working on adopting a new literacy program at our school. It will involve one afternoon a month, and bringing in "Mystery Readers". Perhaps a local author to come in and read their new book, or a local celebrity to come and read their favorite book.
If you are involved in reading programs at your local schools, I'd like to hear about them. Have you ever volunteered to read to a child other than your own?
What is one of your favorite memories of this?

I used to be a literacy volunteer but I have not done it for years now. I loved the time spent teaching someone to read. It is amazing how many adults cannot read in our area. Some even have a high School deploma. Most do not though. Most had to quit school at an early age to help on the farm. Sad.
I am glad to see you are starting a reading program in your area. Reading and the love of reading is a wonderful thing. It has the ability to take us to places that we would normally never get to go.

This is true! I love to read, and so do my girls. Some of our best memories are the days during the summer when they were little that I would take them to the summer reading program at the library in our town.

Well,I am a school teacher and have to read to my kids once a week at least one of those big books which are colorful and enjoyable to read. Kids realy love that. I am no celebrity, but I do try to introduce basic literacy terms like author, illustrator, capitalisation, vocabulary, grammar and stuff like that. It is difficult to integrate all of these inone reading but if you link it to their pre existing schema they will be able to relate and enjoy the story better and subconciously pick up these literacy skills.

Where do you teach and what grade? I'm not in the classroom, but rather in the superintendent's office, working on grants and special projects (Like the new literacy program). I want to try to pull the middle and high school students back in and foster a love for reading that they can carry with them when they graduate.

I am a primary school teacher and I specialized in Literacy when I was at university. Your literacy program sound very exciting for the children. I am sure it captures their interest and imagination. I think a good idea is a good idea to bring in 11 year old to read to 5 year olds. Then they can see it is not just adults that can read. One week a year in a school I taught at had book week. During this each class did a project about a particular children's author and one of their books. One afternoon each teacher read a book and the children choose which story telling they wanted to go to. I read a picture book about a penguin and afterward the children took part in a craft protect to make a penguin out of cardboard. At the end of the week the children had a party and dressed up as a character from a book.

When I get this completed, I would love to send you the outlines. I want to add a craft to go along with the theme, and have a tea party and things like that. I want to bring excitement back to reading.
