We took my daughter's training wheels off!

My daughter is 4 years old and just started riding a small bike with training wheels this spring. The training wheels lasted through her big brother and now her, but the one was about to fall apart. My husband took them off 2 days ago and started to teach her how to ride without them. She didn't do too well the first night (he was very patient with her) and got tired of falling off. Last night I took her out, gave her one push and off she went! She still isn't very stable but she can go a nice distance. She was so proud of herself and so was I! My son was 4 when we took them off his bike and while I think it is a little young to take them off, both children did great! How old were your children when the training wheels came off?

My son got his first bike (with training wheels) for his fifth birthday.. He's big for his age and apparently was too heavy for the bike! The training wheels couldn't take the weight and they slowly started bending upwards.. But Joshua was still too excited about his new bike, he just kept riding on.. In one week, he was riding all over the neighbourhood with the training wheels in the air!! Best part of it? I didn't even have to teach/support him at all! When I got home from work on day, he was just all over the place!!

My son was 4, while he could ride fine, the concept of turning the wheel and balancing at the same time were beyond him. The tree he hit was fine. He was an animal though, just a few weeks later, he started doing wheelies and building ramps.

Oh that is great! Hooray for your daughter- I think mine was older- but she never really got the hang of it- She rides bike all over the place now and loves it- she is 10- One day she got on and went out and just made herself- I think she was 8- but the training wheels came off around 6ish- It's funny now when I think of it- She isn't a great roller skater either- I'm hoping she gets mad enough and just accomplishes it- I love to roller skate.
