What's for Lunch?

United States

Today I thought I would keep it simple and have a cup of soup for lunch along with a sandwich. I chose peanut butter and fluff for the sandwich and chicken noodle soup. I was actually looking forward to the flavor of the chicken noodle soup. Campbell's Chicken Noodle was one of my favorites and we had it often when we were kids and I served it to my kids as well. The only soup I had was one that I bought at Aldi. Two spoonfuls into the soup I realized that it wasn't the flavor I had been looking forward to having. Bottom line is if you want a particular item, don't skimp. Buy the brand that you remember best. The generic is not going to come close to what you are looking for. Indulge yourself and spend the extra money to buy the name brand.

I hear you there. I am sorry it didn't work out for you. I will buy generic but somethings just have to be regular brand. When you have a taste for something you just got to have it. No substitutions. Hope your day goes well.

Every now & then I resort to the bought soups. I tend to have packets rather than tins. They have come out with this 99% fat free, vege soup packet this winter. They are all vegetable, & quite thick in consistency. Y favourite is potato & leek.

I am really fussy about which tinned soups that I buy, my favorite is the rosella tomato soup and nothing else compares to this!!! I dont buy the generic brand soups as often they are cheap and nasty!!! For the answer to your first question I had a couple of tacos for lunch today, which was really yummy and something different to the normal stuff that I have! I usually have soup and a sandwich for lunch.

I am so addicted to campbells chicken noodle soup! I have bought store brands and they just don't compare. It is worth the extra few cents to get the good brand on things that you really enjoy. I alternate between that and the alphabet soup and tomato...add cheddar of course. Grilled cheese is great with this lunch. Generic is good for paper towels ....not soup. don't mess with the soup.

This reminds me of those Campbell's soup cups, which I bought once because they seemed convenient. It ended up tasting like plastic and chemicals, and I couldn't even finish the cup. I usually eat no-name soups...I don't really see the difference between them and brand name soups. Though I don't eat soup much anyway.

I like to treat myself on a Saturday night because I've been to the gym five times in a week and have ate healthily for 6 days, I like to have a takeaway and watch a good movie or two, I usually have an Indian, nice curry, chicken masala is my favourite, I don't feel guilty because I can easily burn off the excess calories on the treadmill etc..

Agreed! There are some things you can buy off brand- Canned soup is not one of them- My parents will pick some up at Save Alot (like Aldi)-- I pay the extra for Campbells- I tried theres before and I was like- I think not- I will buy geneneric canned vegetables-- but not tuna fish, soup, chef boyardee or things like that- I too love chicken noodle soup- I also love their chunky chicken noodle!

We are on a budget and cannot afford the good brands. I have been waiting for a sale of Campbell's Thick and Chunky Soups, but no avail. So we have to do with what is on sale, even if they taste like crap. We had one of those dried noodle soup packages, plus some bread. I had just the soup plus a cup of tea. I wish my husband would not think that there is going to be a great depression and he will run out of money. I am a good manager.

I have bought some of the generic products that have been really good, but others that are just no comparison. When buying generic products, I usually just buy a small amount to try, and will only buy more after I have tried them. I remember buying some canned stew from Sav-a-Lot and bringing it home when we had a taste for Dinty More Beef Stew. I opened the first can and it didn't look very good. After one taste, I donated the other cans. I figured that I would eat it if I were hungry enough, but it really wasn't very good at all.

Well this is funny. My children just called to say they would like to come for lunch if we were available. We are! I said how about a tuna melt sandwich and chicken noodle soup. I then decided to sit here at myLot and the first post I saw was your sandwich and soup for lunch! Now a peanutbutter sandwich I understand but not peanutbutter and fluff! But see now by the time I finished typing that line my thoughts changed to oh my gosh that does sound good after all. Enjoy your lunch.

I have to agree with you in saying that not all generic brands are at an equal level with their brand name competitors, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try them at all. Some no-name products are really good, and they are at a good price but you won't know which are which until you try them at least once.

What is the fluff you used? Marchmallow? I don't think that it would be good. Maybe you do. I would say make our own chicken soup and hopefully buy our chicken from a butcher. Then we would be treating ourselves to something really good for us. Also when using an off brand you can use a bit less water and add a chicken bouillon cube if necessary. Good luck with what you buy in the future.
