I am seeing different colored stars..what does it mean? Why don't comments rate?

I have posted Mylotting questions before and always appreciate the information provided. However, I do not rely solely on feedback from fellow members. I have copied all the guidelines and read them over, and hard copy Mylotters suggestions as well...so I am showing incentive here. However, I am perplexed by a couple of things and wondered if anyone would could assist me. While reading over Mylot guidelines, blog info etc. I have not come accross the star ratings. I have no idea why there are so many different colors..from white, yellow, purple, red, green and pink (maybe?). Anyway do they have something to do with content, or something else? Do they have different ratings within the reputation rating...according to color. Also what factors influence the reputation rating within the star system? Is there a certain star color to aspire to? Secondly, I am unclear why so many sites I visit rarely have the ratings checked off? The first thing I do when looking over responses to a discussion I posted is rate the response...even before I reply to it. To me if someone is willing to take the time to add to a topic I can take the time to give them a rating. So far I have never ticked a negative or or abuse thus far. No reason too. So I do understand that part of the system but cannot fathom why so many out there are not giving their respondants the pat on the back most deserve. By and large Mylotters come up with great perspectives all over the site...so why don't they rate a rating? Same thing with topic postings. I see many not rated after 4 months of sitting there with a long list of commentaries. While we are on that subject what types of things influence reputation ratings. Mine has gone down three points in the last while so some people are not happy with my perspective...and that is fine. I'm far too far along the road of life to worry about 'popularity contests.' I am curious though...because how will I know if I am impacting someone's reputatiion negatively when it is not my intent? Anyway on the plus side (no pun intended) one thing that most people do...is assign a best response. But how can anyone do that if they haven't even decided what to rate the response in the first place. It hurts my head! Anyway..there goes the news reporter in me...give me the facts, I need to gather the facts....so if anyone out there can help me take the stars out of my eyes...I'd be very grateful.

According to many Mylottes, reputation is the result of the ratings you get by other users and myLot themselves are not implicated. But I got a slighly different impression when my points suddenly sacked from 93 to 73 after four days withou posting. Anyway, negative rating should be reserved for those who don't respect the rules or do treat others with hate, despise, etc. Or for repeating the same discussion topic again and again. Never should there be a negative rating because the writer's opinion doesn't suit you. As to rating best answers, I think there should be a time limit, let's say a month. When not having rated the best response, they could reduce this from the user's rating, not from his earnings, or would you?

Hi thanks for adding your experience and understanding to the topic..it is appreciated. I like your idea of the time rating...and even the reduction..it would perhaps assist people in making a choice..any choice. Good idea.

"best response" on this discussion is absolutely a great explanation of the star rating system. Reading the responses to this discussion (even though I joined 7 months after the discusssion was initiated) has helped clarify myLot practices for a newbie. I appreciate having previous discussions available as resources.

I feel the rating system needs to be done away with. There have been a lot of people who received a lower star rating who truly don't deserve the lower star. Many of them have left MyLot. Their responses were always well thought out and had quality content. Their discussions were the same.

hey pers:) you first earn a star after posting 100 posts. Your star is your reputation, as viewed by other readers. The more positive rates you will have the higher your star rating number will be. There are members that rate a post with a negative rating then the star will have lower points. When you look at a post you will see only what you can rate, not what was rated already. Most of the posts are rated immediately and also the replies but you do not have a way of seeing that.

Hello Perspectives This is what I have been told. You earn a star rating after you have posted 100 posts. It will depend on how many people have rated you and if they have rated you postitive. Mylot has assigned the colors. I started out when I reached my 100 posts as an 8 star and I think that is red. (color really doesn't mean anything). I have seen moved up to the highest which is a 10 and is blue. You can take your mouse and put it on the star and you can see how you are rated. I think I am 97 out of 100. The way people rate you, is if you respond to them in details, etc. I am like you and never rate anyone negative. If I don't like it or whatever I just don't rate them. But I do take time and rate all mylotters who respond to my discussions etc. I also rate the discussion I reply to. I hope this helps. If you still have questions, please post and I will try to answer.

Thank you, you input helps and is appreciated. So the different colored stars don't mean anything in the rating scale? Then why do they have them?
