Do you know the Then Comandments? Can you recite them?

How do you interpret them.
Were they worded differently in the Old Testament than they are in the New Testament? Do you feel one version leaves more room for interpretation than the other? Do you think there is ANY room for interpretation at all?
I look forward to reading your thoughts.

I do not see in the Ten Commandments any room for interpretation. To me they are plain and self explanitory. When you say interpretation, do you mena that two people can get a totally different message from it. I would be curious to hear your interpretation of them.

I believe that thou shalt not lie and thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor are under the same umbrella, the second is kind of giving an example.
A lie, is a lie, is a lie. There is no such thing as a little white lie. Either you are lying or telling the truth. There is nothing in between. Christians may try to justify their lies. But, believe me, they know that they are doing wrong. They are just counting on the other person not knowing.

I wasn't exactly "taught" the ten commandments.
Or perhaps, I should say I was never made to memorize them. But, of course, I have heard them and I have read them. Sometimes I have seen them worded differently. I was hoping my question would prompt a few to post them as they know them. I guess I didn't make myself clear enough.
One example of my confusion is as follows.
Thou shalt not lie...
Thou shalt not bear false witness
Is that the same commandment worded differently or two different commandments?
Also, I seem to see many religious people who follow religions that supposedly follow the ten commandments, yet they see to be okay with telling "white lies". I don't interpret it to say "thou shalt not lie (but white lies are okay).
Maybe I'm wierd, but that's one of the things I ponder.

The 10 commandments of the Christian Bible and the 10 commandments of the Catholic church are different. The Catholic church does not have the 2nd commandment about the idols. Instead they form the envy into two catergories....they shalt not cover they neighbors wife and thou shalt not envy. Interesting...

I know the ten commandments. I used to be able to recite them word for word. I just started trying to recite them now but I am a little rusty but I did get most of it correct. I think the ten commandments are pretty clear. The only version that really changes the commandments significantly that I know of is the Duay version of the Bible.

I don't remember the Ten Commandments being in the New Testament. In Mark 10:18-19 Jesus gives a condensed version of the ten commandments, but it is not complete. The Ten Commandments come from Exodus 20. In the 22 chapter of Matthew, starting at verse 36, Jesus is asked by the Pharisees..."Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

Okay, now I'm a little confused. I know that the Ten Commandments appear in both Exodus and Deuteronomy, but where are they in the New Testament?
I do know the Ten Commandments, which is kind of odd seeing as I am not a member of any religion which would include or be involved with them. However, it's kind of hard to avoid learning such things seeing as there are posters and monuments with these commandments written on them all over the place. Not only that, but when I was young I remember learning them in school.
Since I enjoy studying religions other than my own, I've discovered that most religions have pretty similar moral rules really. There isn't much in the Ten Commandments that is different from the rules or honor codes that most people follow, whatever their religion. (Other of course than that first part that actually pertains to worshipping that particular God, and the Sabbath stuff.)
Some commandments leave more room for interpretation than others I think. Actually, when you read the text of the Ten Commandments, they kind of paint the Christian God as a bit of a jerk, considering the bits about punishing children for the iniquity of the parents and being a jealous God and all.

I haven't read either in depth. I just assumed that they were. I guess this is my way of educating myself a little more. Thanks to both of you for your responses.

I never saw more than the one set Moses got in my bible. I personally don't believe there is room for interpretation. I always thought the Bible was the inspired word of God. It just seemed wrong to mess with it.

Though I can't recite them in order, miamilady, yes, I do know the Ten Commandments. To my knowledge there is only one set of commandments. There's always room for interpretation in discussing the Bible, but I feel that their meaning is quite clear. Nowadays people often say that the Bible was meant for another time, not for modern times, but I believe that it was meant for all times. Basically, the Ten Commandments is God telling us the things that we should not do.

I can name some of them, but I can't do them all off the top of my head at the moment. I do have a necklace that has them all on it though.
