Energy-saving Lightbulbs

I ordered one of those energy-saving lightbulbs and I'm curious to find out if it will do what it says. They guarantee that it will last for 7 years! I told my youngest daughter that if I die before the 7 years is up to make sure she gets my money back for this lightbulb. It certainly costs enough. But, anything to help save energy.

We had a news break over here about those and the disposal of them or if they get broken in the home, with the amount of mercury that is in them...I hope that they dont break easy too.

Its quite bad, and to dispose of them also, there is only one place in the whole of Australia that recyle Mercury..So really dont know how they are going to go about it...

Calais is right. I read an article a few months ago about some lady who had a fluorescent light bulb break in one of the bedrooms in her house, and now has that whole bedroom quarantined, with plastic sheets taped to the doorway to seal it. There is so much mercury in there that no one can enter the room without protective gear. Yet no one, not the government, not the manufacturer of the lightbulb, not the retailer she bought it from will cover the costs to clean the place out. And she can't afford it. If legislation ever manages to pass a bill that requires everyone to use these lightbulbs, we're in big trouble.

Gosh, I really wasn't aware of this, Calais. Thank you for opening my eyes. I will be very careful handling this lightbulb. It's a good thing I don't have any little ones around too often.

I have some of these and they seem to do very well. Except three of them have burned out already. Just kidding! None of them have burned out, they are all doing well, and I have had them for several years. Good job on helping yourself save energy.

You really had me going there for a minute, Geminigirl, LOL. I think that if we all contribute in some little way things would get a lot better.

That is great. You do need to be carefull with them as some of them burn out if you touch the bulbs with your hands. Applies to some of the florsent bulbs that go into the normal sockets, and also the halegon bulbs. There is two problems if the socket is a 3 way socket you might not be able to find a 3 way bulb. Second problem is if you to the lamp tied to a dimmer switch it wont work correctly either.

Yes there is some 3 way fluo compact lamp that exist. But for the moment, they are too big and you will see them in your lamp :)

I bought a lot of them and I like them. They have actually caused my electric to drop some, not much, but some. I like them because they are enviormentally friendly, cost less to use and last so long. Yes, the intitial pay is higher but in the long run, it will save you money, unless you have a clumbsy husband like I do and he cleans the lights and breaks them.

These are all the things that attracted me to them, rosaflorence. It seems that I am constantly buying replacement lightbulbs. Hopefully mine will last a very long time.

I want to get those for all my lamps. I hear if everyone used those we could save enough energy to equal thousands of cars being taken off the road (pollution wise).

That's true, Aurone, but I look at it like this-it's not the common, everyday people who consume so much energy. It is the thankless people with the huge mansions, gas-guzzling automobiles, etc. I mean, who really needs 10 bedrooms and 7 baths?LOL

No one, unless they have more family than I want to deal with.

Those lightbulbs are awesome, and really they are much less expensive than regular lightbulbs. The initial cost to purchase them is more, but they save a lot of money because they take much less electricity to run and last for so much more longer. I have a light that pretty much never gets turned off. I would be replacing a normal bulb every 3 months or so. I replaced it with a compact flourescent almost 2 years ago and it's still going strong.

Mine doesn't look at all like a regular lightbulb, gabs. It does screw into the socket, but the body of it is white and in a coil shape.

Well it's really nice to hear you doing something to improve our atmosphere. Is that the word I'm looking for? They do costs a lot but it'll eventually come as a save since you won't have to buy light bulbs anytime soon for the next 7 years.

Oh yes. I bought some as well as my parents. They did burn out. They were legit bulbs, we didn't find them at the dollar store. I purchased mine at a different store than my parents. So even if they didn't last, at least we tried. And we'll continue to use them because they last just as long as regular bulbs, if not somewhat longer.

I don't like them, they make the room too dull, I like the full power ones because they light the room up better. I understand people want to save the world, but to be honest, they should try another method, like stop polluting the world with there cars and walk for once in there life. Yes I am mainly talking to USA and Australia lol, your the guys who pollute the world the most from car fumes. :) Anyway, overall it really depends whether you can handle the dull lights. To be honest, its not worth it. :)

Here at home we've changed for free all the regular light bulbs for energy-saving ones at a shopping mall. I've done the math and everything goes like they say, you can save almost 70%/year of your energy bill.

That's great news, pnsoliveira. The US should be doing the same if it is really serious about cutting down on energy overuse. Those bulbs are mighty expensive.

Ohhh, those lightbulbs are incredible!! My mother's been using them here at home since almost ten years, and they really save a lot of energy! And they do last a long time. Right now you can find many different models, shapes and sizes, so you can use them in your living room or a small lamp! I 100% recommend them to you! ;)
