Student drivers and the road. - Why do people not respect student drivers?

My daughter just got her learner's permit and I was just giving her lessons today. She was doing so well until this looser guy kept harrassing her on the road. My daughter was going the limit and this guy was beeping the horn and tailgaiting her. Meanwhile he decided to pass her on her left side almost hitting the car my daughter let pass!! I was so furious because my daughter got so nervous thinking she did something wrong. After explaining to her it wasn't her fault, I asked her to park the car so I could take over. The whole incident was scary as hell, he almost hit us and the other driver. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can take her around with no angry roadragers?? I'll be paying for her driver's ed classes, but I do want to giver her some lessons on my own. Those classess are so exppensive you know. Anyways, are you a student driver hater? Do you have suggestions on how to avoid them? The last time she pulled over and let another crazy one by, but this time it was so sudden, we just couldn't avoid it.

What a complete arrogant a$$hole, everyone was a learner at one stage..This annoy the hell out of me...I know here in Australia if you get their number plate and report it, they will be called in to do their test again, that annoys a lot of people with the fear of losing their liscence...

Oh didnt you know that the ones on their P's are just so experienced because they have so many years of driving under their belts, they are also indestructable...NOT...They are the worse offenders and yet it should it should be fresh in their minds how being a learner feels so they should have the upmost respect for learners...

Oh is that true? I find it impossible to take a lesson without almost being killed due to some dic*head speeding, turning into my lane without indicating or doing a sudden u-turn in the middle of a highway- near impossible to brake! I'll definetely start getting their number plates- I'm sick of arrogant drivers! Most of them though are men either on their P's or with "hotted" up cars. Nadine.

Wow i wish they would do that here in the states! So many people would be loosing their licences. That would also cut down on traffic too i bet.

Unfortunatly there is no way to avoid road rage such as you experienced. It is so tense teaching a young person to drive as it is without the bull. I know...I have taught 3 of my girls to drive with one to go. I do think being vocal about such issues may raise public awareness. These impatient people need to realize that there are new and inexperienced drivers on the road...even those with experience often have to deal with these impatient, angry fools. Get the licence # if possible and call it in! The police will speak to the driver and if there are too many complaints they will do something about it. Another thought for these drivers...Most of the time they are so caught up in their own selfish thoughts that they do not even realize that the person they are harrassing and giving the finger to could be someone they know and care about!

They don't stop to think of the dangers and distractions they create. While it can be annoying to be behind a slow driver, it isn't the end of the world. Patience really is a virtue.

I'm glad you mentioned that too. It's true sometimes even the experienced folks go throught this type of nonsense. Not long ago these cars kept tailgating and honking at this one car that was going extra slow. Upon coming closer to it, I noticed it was an elderly couple. I felt so bad that they were being harrassed like that. It's so ridiculous how people don't stop to think before they act.

I like that. Very well said. People need a wake up call to driving etiquette these day.

Sometimes we get angry over silly things. He probably was trying to rush, so it was his fault. Don't worry about it in fact she got a good lesson in "real" driving. I was always told never to let your family drive with you when you are learning. My family yells so I definitely wouldn't want them to teach me how to drive! :X. Driver classes can be expensive, if you look for some local people that aren't affiliated with a big organization they can be cheaper. There is this one man that does it in my city and he charges much less! He is very nice as well. Have a nice day. Pablo

Yes, there is a guy who taught me. it was great, i could drive in the morning or at night and he would come pick me up at my house as well as drop me off! At the time it was only $25 bucks a class.

I know, I just figure saving enough $$$ until she's ready and then have her take a few classes to go for her licence. Times are tough when you just had a $300 laundry bill. Ahahaha.

Well...there are a LOT of jerks on the road...there's no doubt that you met a big one. I go the speed limit when I drive and people tailgate me too, it's annoying but I NEVER speed up for them. They always end up passing me, but they don't honk at me. So just tell your daughter to keep going the speed limit, and most people will not honk at her, they'll just go around...and that's fine. And like you said she did one day, if one is not passing and is being mean than have her go into another lane or pull to the side of the road. Also, take down their license plate and report them! The cops can't do anything without proff or something, but they can keep and eye out to see if he does get himself into trouble. Also, it couldn't hurt to bring a video recorder, and if someone starts being really mean again, record it, and give the video to the police.

I know that's a good idea. Thing is I have my camera phone, but I was just too frazzled to do anything. I am trying to make a cardboard sign for when I bring her out. I figure her best experience will be on the road you know. I will keep an eye for these mofo's and take down licence plates because it is ridiculous you know. Thanx for the 411 :).

Yeah that's another thing. Knowing I have no control of the emergency brake makes me nervous. My new car has the emergency brake next to the foot pedals. If it was right next to the gears, I probably be less frazzled. lol.

Well, you have to look at it this way. She got road experience in a different way. She got to learn how to deal with idiots on the road. Yes, driver's ed is expensive. So keep up the lessons with her so she can move along quicker. I would let her drive in parking lots that are not in heavy use. She can learn her 3 point turns there and get comfortable with the car such as reverse, park in spaces, etc. Then when she has a couple of driver's ed classes under her belt. I would then take her out on the highway and teach her to merge and keep up with traffic. Put her in the slow lane in the beginning. Keep her self esteem up too!

Yes, that is how my mom taught me. We started out in the parking lot, hahaha whip lashing it. But i learned the good use of the break! I would pay someone to drive her on the highway though, saves you on having a heart attack.

When my 2 grandchildren were old enough to learn to drive we paid for one of those licensed training instructors to teach them. One reason was that their birthdays fell at the wrong time to get the schools drivers training. There other reason was that the school charged just as much as private lesson did. they also get more one on one training. Another advantage is that their cars are marked student driver. you could get one of those magnetic signs and put that on your car. your guy might have been a bit more tolerant if he knew that you were with a student driver.

Ohhh yeah, as I mentioned above, I'm getting a big cardboard sign made with some dark letters, maybe bold it up so people won't miss it. Hopefully that will help until we're ready to sign her up to professional classes. :).

My uncle taught me how to drive, and that was the first time that I took over the wheel to drive and I was quite nervous. My problem more than the other drivers were my own uncle who was sitting beside me, he keeps on giving endless lectures and all that. He would almost repeaaaat eveyrthing he said everytime making me feel like I have done something wrong and it makes me even more nervous. During those times when I thought I was doing pretty well, he would suddenly start reminding me again of what I did good and the ones that I need to work on. Don't get me wrong, I did appreciate it a lot, him teaching me to drive and all those points to keep track of. It was just that sometimes he lectures too much and it makes me uncomfortable and not think that I am doing good enough. I also experienced being honked at when I was just starting, and it made me even more nervous that I would have panicked if my uncle didn't tell me to not mind the car behind us, that they should wait or if they can't then they can always pass. I hate the honking part, it's kind of disrespectful to do so, the other driver may either be a student driver, or not from around the area and doesn't know the place that well. Except from certain situations that really call for it.

Awwwww lol. You know what I did the opposite, I taught my uncle how to drive stick. Nowadays, I try to use his truck which is a stick, you know just to move it and be able to park mine next to it or something and he goes "NOOOO, YOU'LL MESS UP MY CLUTCH OR THE TRANSMISSION. I yell at him saying, ahhh hello who taught you in the first place pal?. lol. seriously, it's a pain in the butt. but it's nice that you are thankful and never forget. :). thanx for sharing :)

Hi Myluv4yesash, There are a lot of jerks out there on the road. If nothing else, this episode should have taught her that driveing a car isnt all fun and games. I would thing that on the weekends there should be a few empty parking lots for her to practice in. Maybe in an industrial park or something. You might consider putting a sign on the back of your car thats says student driver. Some people seem to be in so much of a hurry that they dont care about anything or anyone else. All my best, Terry

Indeed your right and I did point that out to her since she has been nagging me all along to teach her and stuff. She keeps going "I CAN'T WAIT TO JUST GO ON MY OWN AND DRIVE". OR "I CAN'T WAIT TO DRIVE TO SCHOOL, WORK, SHOP" blahh blahh blahh, I told her, see Yessie, driving is not that easy sometimes when you encoutner loosers out there.
