I have heard that it is actually like the alphabet. It is phonetic. Not like chinese characters. which are like hieroglyphics. I don't read korean myself. But i believe that it is more akin to english than to chinese. and hence easier to master.

how do I put this, actually, believe it or not, it is much easier to read than to speak the language. you can try browsing websites that teach hanggul and you will at least get the basics of transcribig hanggulin like 30 minutes. really. their characters are pretty easy to understand and write.I am not an expert on this but I foud out that through practice, I am starting to be a bit faster in reading hanggul but then, I am quite still learning translation to english because it is pretty useless to be able to read without understanding, they do go hand in hand.
