Interpreter and translator

What is the different between translator and interpreter? I have just started to do translation work for a few people, and not quite sure understand the difference. In one case, such as issue regarding driving, it was required that the translator (interpreter) to be certified by the state. What is it? And how can one be certified?

I think an interpretor is more the type of person that's used by for instance the UN - a person that traslate speeches and stuff like that while they are going on. A traslater is someone who translate books.
