An employee of Hitachi has demonstrated a cash machine using a biometric security system to read the user's fingers during a press conference in Tokyo. Taking the idea of a cashless society to a new levl, the Japanese company has said it will try out a way to let customers pay simply by scanning their finger.

Yes biometrics is already in use with passports..I had to get a new biometric passport to travel to the U.S so more and more companies and societies will be using this method to simplify security and alleviate fraud on unilateral levels. I think this will spare more time for the various police forces and security persons to concentrate on fighting other types of crime.

It appears what they are doing is storing the biometric info (i.e. fingerprint digital signature) on the smart card (i.e. passport) and then use a RFID to send the biometric info to a customs and immgiration computer which then performs the validation against your fingerprint swipe.
