Eating meat - is it crueller to eat some animals than others?

The reason I ask this is that I was reading a discussion earlier. The person who wrote it said they had overheard someone talking about killing, cooking and eating dogs. Their take on it that it was cruel and they went on to say this was because there were other meats available to buy so why did these people want to eat dogs? This seemed a bit illogical to me, it's like it's ok to kill some animals for food but not others. I cannot see that the level of cruelty (if there is any) would differ based on the type of animal. What is your opinion?

I really only eat chicken and turkey. I eat ground chuck on occasion but I don't eat pork at all. Oh and I eat all beef hot dogs. SO I eat beef once in a while but that's about all. Anyhow... I have family who is into the whole hunting thing and they used to breed animals to eat them (like rabbits) and I was always pretty against it. My feelings on the subject are basically that chickens and cows and pigs (even though I don't eat them) and other animals typically found on a farm are bred specifically to be food for humans. Whereas rabbits and deer and fox and other wild animals are not bred to specifically be food for humans. Domesticated animals...like dogs and cats and rabbits are bred to be pets or show animals. They are not typically bred to be food. SO if it's bred for food, it's ok to eat it. If it's not bred for food, don't eat it.

I think the debate would have been better if the person had said it was cruel because we see dogs as domestic animals, friends even. Many people keep these animals as pets, therefore it takes on a new "twist" on cruelty. My husband is from a country that eats horse. I would never dream of eating a horse, or rabbit, etc. I think of these animals as pets. But in other cultures and countries they do eat horse, dog, cat, etc and think nothing of it because that is how they are brought up. It is a matter of opinion really. I mean here in the US, you have animal rights groups picketing, rioting and even harming people wearing fur coats. Or the vegetarians that post all the "cruelty" videos of how cattle, pigs and chickens are killed and kept inhumanely. I don't think it's ok to kill some animals and not others for food. If it's for food, and you're hungry, by all means eat what you need to. Just don't come steal my dog, cook her up and then offer me a plate...lol.

some animals are raised with for the purpose of consumption. They are born and bred for that reason only. There should be no reason to hunt elsewhere for meat. It is all a matter of culture and what is acceptable in your culture.

I don't see any difference in killing what type of animals. As long as the meat can be eaten, I don't discriminate on those animals. I am a meat eater, so basically I admit I can't choose to pity who and who. However, in my religion we are forbidden to eat the meat of a dog. So if a dog is killed for eating, I would not eat it. Not because I pity it, but because I can't.

I think the reason is because so many people view dogs (and cats) as loving pet animals..so the idea of eating them is repulsive...I don't have anything against fish, chicken or cows, but am more accustomed to eating them...at the same time, I just couldn't bring myself to eat, say deer or rabbit..why? Just couldn't. Maybe a Bambi complex as far as deer go--I suppose if I did say live on a farm and had farm animals, then it might be a different story and you'd find me going vegetarian...LOL

There is a high level of abuse of animals at factory farms. Most food coomes from factory farms because it is cheaper than a family farm. That statement was illogial. That person didn't think that all the way out before they said anything.

I can see where we think it is cruel due to the fact that we do not eat them but in other countries they do but they wont eat things like cow or pig. I find it weird but I bet it balances out the food chain if everyone around the world just probably ate the basic meats that we eat there might become a shortage so it might be a better thing even though I think it is wrong to me but to them we are wrong for eating what we eat. It is a very confusing subject I think but I think it is interesting to learn about other cultures.
